Howard Braren graduated from Wagner in 1950 and served as an athletic recruiter for 12 years. During his time as a student, he served as a manager for the 1949 football team that went 7-1-1, the best of any football team up to that time.

Upon graduation, due to his participation as a youth leader for the Lutheran Church, he began recruiting students for college. In 1957, the President of Wagner College personally invited Braren back to serve as Director of Alumni and Church Relations. After he returned to Grymes Hill, the late Hall of Fame football coach, Mickey Sullivan requested Braren's assistance in recruiting athletes. Through his efforts, he helped lay the framework for the 1960 and 1964 undefeated football teams and many other successful squads in basketball, baseball and track & field.

In 1963, he left Wagner to join the professional fundraising consulting firm of Marts and Lundy Inc. where he later became senior consultant. In 1966, Braren became a resident consultant to Augustana College, which led him to a successful forming of his own firm, Howard Braren Associates, Inc. He also served Wagner as an Advisor to the Board of Trustees on fundraising strategies, including the Endowment Challenge Program.Â
