Marine Lieutenant Nick Lia was a member of the 1964 undefeated football team which posted a record of 10-0. Well-rounded, he was an honor student and president of his college fraternity. A true ironman on the gridiron, Lia was a guard on offense and a tackle on defense. He was recognized in “Who's Who in American Colleges” and was captain of his football team in 1965. Presently at the Homecoming football games, a Wagner College football player is selected to receive the Nick Lia Trophy, to honor the Lieutenant who died in the line of duty in Vietnam. This special award is presented to the outstanding Wagner defensive player during the Homecoming day game for his superior play. The trophy has been given out every homecoming since 1969. Additionally a statue of Lia was erected by the entrance to the football field in 2008. For his sacrifice, he received a Purple Heart for our country.
