Somerset, NJ – Wagner senior outfielder
Anthony Godino was named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Baseball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.
For Godino, this marks his second career NEC Player of the Week citation, with the first honor coming back a season ago for the week of May 22. In total, this is his third weekly honor, as he garnered NEC Rookie of the Week honors for the week of April 27, 2015 during his freshman campaign.
With this announcement, the Player of the Week honors remains on Staten Island, as it marks back-to-back weeks that a Seahawk player earned the weekly accolade, as junior catcher
Phil Capra earned Co-Player of the Week last Monday.
Additionally, this marks the first time since the 2015 season that Wagner has collected consecutive Player of the Week awards, 2015 NEC Player of the Year, and current Kansas City Royal, Nick Dini,
won the award on April 6, 2015, followed a week later by current Seahawk
Nick Mascelli repeated the honor on April 13, 2015.
Godino recorded at least one hit, one run and a RBI in every game during Wagner's 4-0 week. Reaching base at a .524 clip, the veteran outfielder totaled eight hits and nine RBIs over a four-game span that featured three wins over Atlantic 10 members (Fordham, Saint Joseph's and La Salle) and one over a Big East foe (Villanova). The Thornwood, NY native, who reached base safely at least twice in each game, clubbed .444 (8-for-18) with five extra-base hits, two HBP, one walk and five runs scored during the four-win week.
Godino sparked a rally during Wagner's mid-week come-from-behind triumph over Fordham. Facing a five-run deficit at 6-1, Godino belted a two-run double that jump-started a six-run sixth inning in the eventual 10-7 win. In Friday's 11-1 victory over Saint Joseph's, he earned his way on base four times and connected on a pair of RBI two-baggers.
The former Pleasantville High School standout crushed two more extra-base hits as Wagner cruised by Las Salle, 15-3, on Saturday, including an RBI double in the fifth inning followed by a triple in the eighth. Godino ended the week with a pair of hits and RBIs in an 8-4 win over Villanova on Sunday.
Batting cleanup for the third time this season, in which Wagner is 3-0, he opened the game against the Wildcats by ripping an RBI base knock to left field in the first and increased the Green & White's lead to 4-1 with a run-scoring single in the seventh.
In addition to Godino, freshman reliever
Nick LePre was included on the Week 5 #NECPrimePeformer List after tossing six innings out of the bullpen, while limiting the opposition to one run and three hits.
