Boyd and Knepplehout Earn Corvias ECAC Player and Rookie of the Month For September

Official Release

Danbury, CT - The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced the Corvias ECAC Men's Tennis Player of the Month for the month of September and, as is the case with the Wagner women's tennis program, the Seahawk men also swept both honors as sophomore Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) earned the monthly accolade while teammate Ilya Knepplehout (Woubrugge, Netherlands/Scala College Secondary School) secured Rookie of the Month

This year's team captain, Boyd has helped guide the Green & White to a 4-0 record this fall.

"Even though he is only a sophomore, he already has shown the maturity and leadership qualities of an upperclassman," said first-year head coach Jason Sinkoff.  "Along with his great leadership, his results reflect his tremendous work ethic."

The Shreveport, LA native is coming off of last season's All-Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie Team honor after posting an 18-9 record.  This season, Boyd is 5-1 while maintaining a perfect 4-0 record in dual matches.

Boyd recorded career singles victory No. 20 back on September 15 against Rider's Matthew Begley in straight sets (6-0; 6-0) and proceeded to duplicate that success in the first conference match of the year, at home against St. Francis Brooklyn's Alex Bosch, with his second straight shutout triumph (6-0; 6-0).  He then made it three shutouts in a row with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Siena's Jace Koretz Z(6-1; 6-4).

In the C bracket singles tournament, Boyd earned a bye in the Round of 16 but the second-year Seahawk couldn't make it another Wagner final as he was ousted in the semifinals, 6-2; 6-3, by NYIT's Rares Ispas.

Kneppelhout has started his collegiate career in fine fashion, posting a 6-1 record in singles competition to go along with a perfect 3-0 mark in dual matches. The Woubrugge, Netherlands native picked up his first career victory against Douglas Nover of Saint Peter's , 6-1; 6-1, then defeated Rider's Ryan Ciaccio (6-1; 6-4), before concluding September's dual-match slate with a 6-3; 6-1 victory over Siena's Evan Nierman.

It was an all-Seahawk championship in the Doubles "C" Bracket as Boyd and Kneppelhout were paired off against sophomore teammates Allen Wang (Clovis, CA/Buchanan) and Jakob Mostyn-Kolb (Melbourne, FL/Melbourne) in the final round.

Boyd and Knepplehout cruised to a 6-2 victory over Stony Brook's Justin Park and Hari Rohan in the quarterfinal round.  In the semis, the pairing edged out Hofstra's Leonardo Pires and Yahn Gawrit, 6-4, which ultimately set up the championship meeting between the Seahawk teammates.  In the finale, Boyd/Knepplehout proved to be too much, coming out victorious, 6-3, to capture the Doubles C crown over Wang/Mostyn-Kolb.
