Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) ReleaseNew York, NY – Senior guard
Marcus Burton (Charlotte, NC/David W. Butler) has been named the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Player of the Week for the week of January 20, as announced by the organization today.
Burton was selected among a list of candidates that included Phil Greene IV of St. John's, Chavaughn Lewis of Marist and Manhattan's Shane Richards. The nod comes a week after the fourth-year guard was included on the
MBWA Honorable Mention list, which featured Sterling Gibbs of Seton Hall, Ashton Pankey of Manhattan, Ameen Tanksley of Hofstra and Stony Brook's Jameel Warney.
For the week, the 6-0 sharp-shooter averaged 26.5 points as Wagner, now 3-3 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play and 5-12 overall, split a pair of road contests. The highlight of the week for the Seahawks came on Saturday when they recorded their first win away from the Spiro Center this season,
an 82-68 victory at Fairleigh Dickinson. The productive week delivered by Burton catapulted him into the NEC scoring lead in both overall scoring average (17.6 ppg) as well as in conference-only contests (23.0 ppg.).
Burton broke the 30-point plateau for the second time in his career, and on the season, as he tallied 31 in Wagner's setback at Bryant (81-73). On Saturday, he posted a game-high 22 points to help lift the Green & White to the triumph over Fairleigh Dickinson.
Over the two-game span, Burton averaged 44.4 percent from the field, and from beyond the arc, while converting on 86.7% from the free-throw line in 34.0 minutes of playing time per game. The Charlotte, NC native is up to 911 career points scored, just 89 away from becoming the 42
nd member of the Seahawks' 1,000 point-club.
Wagner is next in action on Thursday, January 22 when the Green & White host the Saint Francis U Red Flash, who are currently tied with Bryant atop the NEC standings at 5-1, in a 7:00 p.m. tip.
