Senior Guard Marcus Burton Named To Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Men’s Division I Honorable Mention Squad

New York, NY – Senior guard Marcus Burton (Charlotte, NC/David W. Butler) has been named  to the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Honorable Mention squad for the week of January 13, it was announced today.

The hot-shooting 6-0 Burton put on an impressive performance this week, highlighted by a career-high 38-point explosion which carried Wagner to an 85-82 double-overtime win over defending NEC champion Mount St. Mary's.  Burton shot 13-of-24 from the field and an efficient 9-of-10 from the charity stripe during the Seahawks' two-OT thriller over the Mount.

His 38-point outing is the most by a Seahawk since another other deep-shooting guard, Joey Mundweiler, went for 39 at Monmouth on February 28, 2009 en route to a 91-60 win over the Hawks in what was the final game of Mundweiler's career. This was also the final game ever played at Boylan Gymnasium as the Hawks moved into the Multipurpose Activity Center (MAC) the following season.  It also marks the first time a Seahawk has hit the 30-point since December 15, 2012 when Jonathon Williams tallied 33 during a 77-65 victory over Coppin State.

The 38-point outing ranks 13th on the Wagner all-time single-game scoring list. The all-time Seahawk single-game scoring record of 49 points is shared by Terrance Bailey (1/29/86 vs. Brooklyn) and Ray Hodge (12/3/69 vs. Moravian).  The 38 points scored also set the record for the most points ever tallied at the Spiro Sports Center by a Wagner player.  The previous high single-game output by a Seahawk at Spiro, which opened in 1999, was held by Jermaine Hall, who tossed in 36 during an 88-86 win over LIU Brooklyn on February 22, 2001. The all-time Spiro Center scoring mark is held by Central Connecticut's Kyle Vinales who totaled 42 points in a 101-82 loss to the Seahawks on February 14, 2013.

Among his conference peers, Monday's 38-point performance is the most by an NEC player this season, surpassing the 32-point outing crafted by CCSU's Matt Mobley at Sacred Heart on the same evening.

Burton followed this record-setting effort with a pair of productive outings that were each witnessed by national audiences.

On Thursday, January 10, CBS Sports Network televised the contest between the Seahawks and Robert Morris, the 2014 NEC runner-ups. Facing a perennially-successful Colonials' program, the Charlotte, NC native put his team on his back in a tight back-and-forth contest, hitting for 21 points on 8-of-18 shooting, while nailing 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, in 37 minutes of action.  Against the Mount and RMU combined, Burton averaged 29.5 points while connecting on 50.0 percent overall from the field, as well as from three-point range. He also converted at an 83.3 percent clip from the free throw line in the two games while averaging 4.5 rebounds.

Wagner's final game of the week was a "Battle of the Boroughs" affair between LIU Brooklyn and Wagner contested at the Spiro Center in front of the ESPN 3 cameras on Saturday. As the second part of a doubleheader that saw the Seahawk women's team stage a dramatic comeback thriller, the men's game was action-packed as well.

Held to just two points on 1-of-9 shooting in the opening stanza, Burton exploded for 16 second-half points, on 5-of-10 shooting, which included a big-three pointer with 5:05 left which brought the Seahawks to within four, 75-71, stopping a 9-0 Blackbird run in the process.

In his last five games, Burton has scoring exactly 100 points (20.0 average), which brings his career total to 860.

In leading Wagner to a 2-1 record during the three home games, he averaged 25.7 points while shooting 44.3 percent from the field, 42.1 percent from beyond the arc, and 88.2 percent from the charity stripe, while logging an average of 40.3 minutes over this demanding three-game stretch.
