Nwaigwe, Nwajei Sweep Choice Hotels/NEC Weekly Accolades

Somerset, NJ - Redshirt-sophomore center Ugo Nwaigwe (Valley Stream, NY / Valley Stream South) and freshman guard Jasmine Nwajei (Rockaway Park, NY / Murry Bergtraum) were named the Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference (NEC) Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, after leading the Seahawks to a pair of wins last week, marking the first time the Green & White have ever copped both awards in the same week.

While helping the Seahawks reach their highest NEC win total in a decade, Nwaigwe averaged a triple-double during a pair of league wins last week and set a single-game conference record to boot. The ever-improving post player averaged 13.5 points, 14.5 rebounds and 10.0 blocks per contest while shooting 72.2 percent from the floor. She helped Wagner complete a sweep of cross-city rival St. Francis Brooklyn by tallying a career-high 15 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks in a 62-53 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Nwaigwe was even better two days later when the TV cameras arrived on Staten Island. Powering Wagner to a 19-point win over Fairleigh Dickinson in the #NECWBB Game of the Week on ESPN3, the Seahawks' center posted the first triple-double in program history. She tallied 12 points, 19 rebounds and a NEC single-game record 13 blocks in the 67-48 triumph. Nwaigwe's 4.04 blocks per game average rank her second in the NCAA this season, and her total of 101 rejections places her within 16 swats of tying the NEC single-season record.

Nwajei has been on a scoring binge since the last week of January, and the fabulous freshman has shown no signs of slowing down. Spearheading the Green & White's attack in back-to-back wins last week, Nwajei averaged 27.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game. The rookie point guard, who has now copped six NEC Rookie of the Week honors this season, shot 50 percent from the field while playing 79 of 80 possible minutes. Running her streak of 20-plus point performances to seven straight games, Nwajei poured in a career-high 29 points in the #NECWBB Game of the Week on ESPN3 Monday night. Nearly accounting for a triple-double, the NYC product added 10 rebounds and nine assists in the 67-48 win over Fairleigh Dickinson.

Nwajei six NEC Rookie of the Week honors ties a school record, matching the six rookie honors attained by Meredith Kearns in 1998-1999.

Two days earlier, the 5-foot-8 sparkplug scored 25 points, on 11-for-19 shooting, and pulled down 11 rebounds in a nine-point win over Verrazano Bridge rival St. Francis Brooklyn. Nwajei's 17.8 points per game season average is tops amongst NEC rookies and sixth on the league's overall leader board.

Nwaigwe's first career honor represents the first time a Wagner player has been honored since Ashley Linscott on January 26, 2004. For Nwajei, it is her third-straight NEC Rookie accolade and the sixth of the season.

The Seahawks return to action on Saturday, February 22 at LIU Brooklyn with tip time slated for 2:00 pm.
