Cleveland, OH – Trevor Loveland (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill West), who led the 2013 Wagner football team with 69 tackles while holding a 3.85 GPA in Business Administration, was among 43 student-athletes from across the nation named to the 16
th annual Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) Academic All-Star Team, it was announced by the FCS ADA today.Â
Â
Football players from all FCS institutions are eligible for the ADA Academic All-Star Team and each of the nominees were required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. Each nominee must have reached his second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution, having completed a minimum of one full academic year, while participating in 50 percent of his team's games during the 2013 season.
"The FCS ADA is honored to present this prestigious award to our football student-athletes each year," stated FCS ADA President Brian Hutchinson, director of athletics, Morehead State University. "Each year, these young men epitomize the definition of student-athlete, both in the classroom and on the field. Our Association is pleased to recognize their accomplishments annually."
Â
The only student-athlete to hail from a Northeast Conference (NEC) institution among the 43 Academic All-Star Team members, Loveland was one of 90 total nominees whose credentials were evaluated by a special Review Committee of FCS athletics directors, comprised of Hutchinson (chair), Ken Beazer, Southern Utah, Charlie Cobb, Appalachian State, Ron Strollo, Youngstown State, and Jeff Tingey, Idaho State.
Â
Loveland is on track to earn his undergraduate degree from Wagner in May and is planning to begin taking classes towards an MBA this fall while competing on the Seahawk football team as a graduate student. In 2014, the athletic 6-3, 230-pound linebacker will look to build on a redshirt junior season that saw him not only lead the team with 69 tackles, but also register a team-best 12.0 tackles for loss for minus 33 yards. He also recorded three sacks for minus 12 yards and was credited with two forced fumbles, one pass breakup and one blocked kick.
Â
In
Wagner's 23-20 win over eventual NEC Champion Scared Heart on October 5, Loveland delivered a pivotal defensive play with a blind-sided sack and strip of Pioneer QB AJ Noel midway through the third quarter. The fumble was scooped up and returned 23 yards for a touchdown by sophomore defensive linemanÂ
Mike Mentor (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen/Fork Union and widened Wagner's lead to 17-3.
Loveland's inclusion on the 2013 FCS ADA Academic All-Star Team marks the second major honor that he has received this academic year. On November 7, it was announced that Loveland had
been named to the 2013 NCAA Division I Capital One Academic All-District Football First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Capital One Academic All-District Team recognizes exceptional scholar-athletes who excel in both academics and athletics.
