Brooklyn Heights, NY - Freshman point guard
Jasmine Nwajei (Rockaway Park, NY/Murry Bergtraum) exploded for 25 of her game-high 27 points in the second half and sophomore guard
Jordyn Peck (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) added 19 to carry Wagner to a gritty 73-62 Northeast Conference (NEC) road victory over St. Francis Brooklyn.
In defeating a Terrier squad that came into the game with a perfect 7-0 home record, Wagner improves to 3-5 in the NEC and 4-15 overall while the SFC is now 4-4 in league play, 13-6 overall.
Nwajei picked up her second personal foul seven minutes into the game and did not return the rest of the half. In her absence, fellow freshman guard
Lyndsay Rowe (South River, NJ/St. John Vianney) stepped up with 12 first-half points as the Seahawks entered the locker room with a 27-23 lead at intermission.
In the second half, Nwajei took over, sinking 9-of-15 shots, including a pair of three-pointers, and went 7-of-9 from the free throw line, including a host of crucial ones down the stretch, to key the Wagner victory. The three-time NEC Rookie of the Week added seven rebounds and five assists on the evening.
Redshirt sophomore center
Ugo Nwaigwe (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) made her presence felt in the second half, scoring six of her seven points, while and grabbing all eight of her rebounds and both of her blocks following intermission.
Wagner outshot the Terriers 41%-28% in the opening half, while holding a 27-23 rebounding edge. In addition to Rowe's critical 12-point first-half output, Peck tallied nine points as the Seahawks were able to reach halftime with the lead minus their usual contributions from Nwajei.
The Green & White were on top 11-10 when Nwaeji was whistled for her second foul at the 13:05 mark, and with the dynamic point guard on the bench, Wagner was able to outscore St. Francis Brooklyn 16-13 in seizing a four-point halftime lead.
A key in Wagner maintaining its first-half lead were critical three-point jumpers by senior forward
Laura Amorosa (Kirkland, Quebec/Phillips Academy), Rowe and Peck. Amorosa's long-range missile came off a feed from redshirt freshman guard
Jazmine Hamlet (Manhattan, NY/Francis Lewis) put Wagner in front 15-11 at the 9:22 mark.
Rowe's three-pointer, her second of the first half, followed at the 8:03 juncture off another Hamlet assist and made it an 18-13 game. Peck's trifecta at 6:21, off of a kickout pass from freshman power forward
Taylor Butigian (Rockaway Park, NY/Christ the King), gave Wagner a 21-16 edge as the Seahawks maintained at least a three-point lead the rest of the half.
The first 10 minutes of the second half were tight, as neither team led by more than five points. Five consecutive points by Jessica Kaufman gave the Terriers a 42-38 lead with 11:48 left. Nwajei then keyed a 7-2 spurt, reeling off five straight points on a jumper followed by an old-fashioned three-point play that gave the Seahawks a 43-42 lead with 10:56 left.
After Kaufman gave SFC a 44-43 lead at 10:45, Nwajei hit a cutting Peck in stride with a gorgeous feed, and when the crafty lefty sank the layup, Wagner was back in front 45-44.
After Kaufman made one of two free throws with 9:46 to go forge a 45-45 tie. Nwajei triggered a decisive 12-3 run with a layup at 8:53 which gave the Seahawks a 47-45 lead.
Elidih Simpson then pumped in a three-pointer to give the Terriers their final lead of the game at 48-47 with 8:25 to go. A Nwajei jumper in the lane at 7:48 gave Wagner the lead for good at 49-48. Six consecutive points by Peck were followed by a huge banked in three-point jumper by Nwajei, with the shot clock winding down, that staked Wagner to the game's biggest lead of 57-48 with 4:23 left.
Nwajei sank another big three with 3:05 left to again grow the lead to nine at 61-52. SFC never got closer than six points the rest of the way as the Seahawks converted seven of their final eight free throws down the stretch, with Nwajei going 4-of-4, in sealing the 11-point victory.
Tonight's victory over SFC capped a four-game road swing for the Seahawks who return to the cozy and comfortable confines of the Spiro Sports Center on Saturday, February 1 when they host Saint Francis U at 1:00 pm in the first of two straight home games with a 7:00 pm game on tap on Monday, February 3 vs. Robert Morris.
