Bethlehem, PA - The Wagner baseball team fell to Lehigh on Wednesday, 11-4.
It wasn't until the late innings that the Seahawks lost control of the contest. After taking a quick 4-0 lead, the Mountain Hawks chipped away at the deficit before jumping out in front thanks to strong seventh and eighth innings.
Early on, the Green & White saw three runs cross the plate in the first thanks to a bases-loaded walk, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly. Freshman Diego Tavarez and senior Chris Conniff provided the RBIs in the inning.
Graduate student David Melfi then added a sacrifice fly in the third to put Wagner up 4-0. But the Seahawks couldn't keep Lehigh from mounting a comeback, eventually ceding the game-tying run on a single in the fifth.
From there, Lehigh rallied to score two runs in the seventh and five runs in the eighth to take control of the contest. Junior Jake Toporek was handed the loss.
Wagner drops its penultimate midweek in 2024, but will shift its focus to a major series this weekend against Sacred Heart. The two teams are tied atop the Northeast Conference (NEC) standings alongside LIU.
Game one on Friday is scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm at Jim Hynes Baseball Stadium at Kean University in Union, NJ.
