West Long Branch, NJ - The Wagner College men's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference contest at Monmouth, 12-6 on Tuesday afternoon.
In a high-scoring first quarter, both teams scored three goals. Junior James Rea found the back of the net twice in the opening quarter, Rea has seven goals in the last two games.
With the game tied at three entering the second quarter, the Hawks outscored the Seahawks 2-0 to take a 5-3 lead into halftime.
After Monmouth took a 6-3 lead early in the third quarter, the Seahawks launched a 2-0 run to cut the Monmouth lead to 6-5 with 6:40 remaining in the third. The run was sparked by goals from senior Nick Martini and freshman Ian Muchineuta. Monmouth closed the third quarter on a 2-0 run to take an 8-5 lead into the fourth quarter.
Monmouth outscored Wagner 4-1 in the fourth quarter to earn the victory. Nick Martini tallied his third goal of the game in the fourth quarter, it was his third hat trick of the season.
Wagner will be back in action on Saturday, March 2 when they welcome NJIT to Hameline Field at 12:00 pm.
