Baseball Closes Out NEC Home Slate With Doubleheader Split On Sunday

Lakewood, NJ - The Wagner baseball team wrapped up its final Northeast Conference (NEC) homestand of the 2022 season splitting Sunday's doubleheader as the Seahawks posted an 11-3 victory in game one before dropping the second game by a 10-8 count. 
 
Wagner moves to 15-32 overall and 11-13 in conference play while the Mountaineers move to 13-32 and 6-18 in league contests.

The Seahawks erupted for six runs in the bottom of the second to take the early lead. With one out, AJ Vigliotti and Lukas Torres worked a pair of walks before David Melfi sent a single to center to load the bases. 
 
Down in the count 0-2, Quinn Mimnaugh put Wagner on the board first with a single to left field, as both Vigliotti and Torres came around to score. The next batter, Maimu Kobayashi, was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. 
 
 
Mike Ruggiero sent a deep flyball to right as Melfi tagged up and scored to make it 3-0. Dante Faicchio stepped in and clubbed his team-leading 11th home run of the season, as his three-run shot made it 6-0. 
 
 
Wagner tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth building a 9-0 advantage. With two outs, Mike Ruggiero ripped a double to left field. Faicchio reached on a hard-hit infield single to short. 
 
Griffin Selby brought in Ruggiero with an RBI single to right, making it 7-0.
 

The next batter, Cody Bey, followed suit with an RBI single to right that made it 8-0 before Vigliotti roped a run-scoring single back up the middle as the Seahawks extended the lead to 9-0. 

 
 

Mount got on the board in the top of the fifth as Tyler Long plated home Matt McTighe with a single to left. 
 
The Seahawks increased its lead by ten, 11-1, as three straight hits, capped by an RBI single by Kobayashi made it 10-1 before Faicchio sent a sacrifice fly to right that plated home Mimnaugh. 
 
The visitors scored twice in the eight as Brady Drawbaugh tripled to right cent that brought in Nick Fleming, who came on as a pinch-runner. Shane Wockley sent an RBI grounder to second that scored Drawbaugh. 
 
Eli Shedd (2-0) earned his second victory of the season after going five innings, giving up one run on four hits while walking three and striking out a career-high eight batters. 
 
 
Brandon Demma earned the save, tossing four innings in relief, striking out a batter despite giving up two runs on three hits.

Mount took an early 2-0 lead as Efrain Correa Jr. singled to left field that brought in Drawbaugh but Thomas Bramley was thrown out home as a perfect rally from Torres to Ruggiero and Melfi was able to put the tag on. Danny Salisbury flew out to left field as Aiden Tierney tagged up to make it a two-run advantage. 
 
The Seahawks cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third. Melfi sent a one-out triple to right-center before crossing the plate on an RBI single by Kobayashi. 
 

Wagner took the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the fourth. Selby sent a one-out single to left before Bey moved him to third on a double down the left-field line. Torres sent a single back up the middle that plated both Bey and Selby giving the Green & White its first lead of the second game. 
 
 
The home team added to its lead with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth taking a 6-2 lead. Selby clubbed his sixth home run of the season on an 0-1 pitch.
 

Vigliotti and Torres both singled as Wagner had runners on second and third following a steal by Torres. 

 
Melfi sent a hard-hit grounder to short which brought in Vigliotti making it 5-2. After a balk moved Torres to third, Mimnaugh reached on an infield single to third that scored Torres as Wagner went up by four.
 

Mount St. Mary's staged an eight-run comeback in taking a 10-6 lead as the Mountaineers sent a total of 13 batters to the plate collecting six hits with the three of the eight runs coming into score on hit-by-pitches. 
 
Wagner chipped into the deficit, cutting the Mount lead to 10-8 in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs, Kobayashi doubled to the left that brought in Melfi before Ruggiero sent an RBI single to the left to score Kobayashi as the Seahawks trailed by two. 
 

John LaPointe was able to set down the Mountaineers in order in the top of the ninth. Bey kicked off the bottom of the inning with a walk before he retired on a 1-6 fielder's choice. 
 
Patrick Burke was able to strike out pinch-hitter Xavier Baker and Melfi to conclude the final conference meeting between the two teams. 
 
Wagner wraps up its home slate on Tuesday afternoon as the Seahawks will have a true home contest for the first time since 2019 as the Green & White welcomes St. John's to SIUH Community Park for a 3:30 p.m. first-pitch at the home of the Staten Island FerryHawks. 
 
Tuesday is also Senior Day as the Seahawks will recognize its Senior Class.
