Baseball Drops Friday Contest At Mount St. Mary's

Emmitsburg, MD – The Wagner College baseball team dropped the series opener on Friday at Mount St. Mary's, 16-4. 
 
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 7-15 overall and 4-12 in Northeast Conference (NEC) action while the Mountaineers move to 7-22 and 3-13 in league play. 
 
Mike Ruggiero broke up Mount's starter Jordan Gerber's no-hit bid with a double to right-center field to kick start Wagner's three-run ninth inning; hefinished 1 for 3 with a run scored on the afternoon. Jared Gillen scored a pair of runs while also going 1 for 3 and driving in an RBI. Ben Montenegro added a pinch-hit RBI single in the Seahawk ninth while Freddy Sabido and Ethan Valdez also drove in a run. 
 
Ryan Lauk took the loss after lasting 4.2 innings in which he gave up 11 runs on ten hits. The Mullica Hill, NJ native issued one walk and recorded eight strikeouts on the day. For Lauk, it marks his eighth start in which he has recorded at least four strikeouts in an outing. 
 
Geber was dominant on the mound for the Mountaineers allowing two runs on just one hit while walking four and striking out ten batters. 
 
Six of the nine Mount hits had two hits in the contest. Four Mountaineers went deep as CJ Kozorosky powered the offense with four RBI. Ryan Fisher and Shane Wockley each drove in three RBI apiece. 
 
The Mountaineers got on the board first in the bottom of the second as Wockley connected on a two-run home run to right field. 
 
Following a scoreless third, the home team tacked on six runs in the bottom of the fourth, building an 8-0 lead, capped off by a two-run sacrifice fly by Brad Drawbaugh and Fisher sending a two-run home run over the wall in right center. 
 
Wagner plated their first run of the game in the top of the fifth as Valdez drew a bases-loaded walk that plated home Gillen, who start the fifth with a walk. Mount added four more scores in the bottom of the frame in taking a 12-1 advantage, with three runs coming via a home run by Kozorosky.
 
The Mountaineers added two runs in the sixth followed by a run in the seventh and eighth as Geber continued to keep the Seahawks without a hit. 
 
In the ninth, Ruggiero sent one to the deepest part of right-center for Wagner's first hit of the game, bringing Geber's afternoon to a close.
 
Gillen singled through the left side that plated home Ruggiero. David Melfi reached after being hit by a pitch to give Wagner two men on with one out. Montenegro came on for Brandon Hall and singled to center field that brought in Gillen for the Seahawks' third run. 
 
Wyatt Duncan walked to load the bases for Sabido, who sent a grounder to first that brought in Melfi. Valdez grounded out to second to end the ballgame. 
 
These two teams will continue the weekend series tomorrow afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. start.
