Norfolk, VA - In the 2020 season opener on Friday afternoon, both Wagner and Norfolk State answered one another's rallies. The Spartans went up 10-7 in the bottom of the eight before the Seahawks mounted one last charge and plated four unanswered in their half of the ninth in posting an 11-10 victory at Marty L. Miller Field.

The Green & White senior trio of Griffin Schneider, Freddy Sabido and Tyler Sanfilippo combined to drive in eight of Wagner's 11 runs this afternoon, going a collective 5-for-13 at the plate with three runs scored in powering the offense.  Senior Nick Zuppe pitched four innings of relief in earning his first win of the 2020 campaign while junior right-hander Kevin Wiseman came on to record his first save of the year.

Alsander Womack and Stephen Baughan each had four hits at the plate to lead Norfolk State with Baughan driving in a team-high four RBI. Womack scored four times while Caleb Ward, who had two hits, crossed the plate thrice. Jackson Sanchez, who came on for Tyler Morgan, was tagged with the loss.

Norfolk State tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth after Baughan lofted a sacrifice fly to center that Womack was able to tag up and score on. Following a single through the right side from Mason Velasquez, Danny Hosley put the home team ahead, 8-7, on a sac-fly to left, scoring Ward from third base.

After a scoreless inning and a half, the Spartans tacked on two more runs to increase the lead to 10-7, as once again Velasquez was the catalyst, singling to center followed by an RBI groundout from Hosley that Wagner was able to turn into the 6-4-3 double play.

In the ninth, junior Emil Matti came on as a pinch-hitter and walked. Schneider continued his strong day with a single to right-center field, which forced Norfolk State to go to its bullpen. With Sanchez inserted into the contest, junior Mike Ruggiero reached on a fielder's choice as Matti was forced out at third. Newcomer Cody Bey drew a walk that loaded the bases for freshman, DiMaggio Cazares

Cazares was patient at the plate and ultimately drew the free pass which forced Schneider home, reducing the Spartans' lead to two. Sabido was the next batter and, on a 1-1 pitch from Sanchez, roped a single through the right side that scored both Bey and Ruggiero and tied the game at 10-10.  Sanfilippo took the first pitch he saw from Sanchez and sent it to right field as Cazares was able to tag up and score the go-ahead run, giving Wagner an 11-10 advantage.

Wiseman came on and struck out Mikey Delgado before getting Ty Hanchey to fly out to right for the second out of the inning. The Axtell, TX native issued a walk to Brandon Crosby before he found himself at second on a wild pitch. The Seahawks elected to intentionally walk Womack before Wiseman closed the door on the victory in getting Ward to pop out to second for Wagner's first win of the year.
