Staten Island, NY – After a delayed start due to rain, the Wagner College baseball fell to the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils, 3-1, in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
With the loss, the Seahawks fell to 15-26 overall and 8-12 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play while the Blue Devils moved to 20-18 and 10-7 in conference tilts.
Junior
Griffin Schneider and sophomore
Mike Ruggiero each had two hits in the opener while junior DH
Freddy Sabido clubbed his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to right field in the bottom of the eighth, that put Wagner on the board.
Senior starter,
Neil Abbatiello (1-5) went five innings in being saddled with the hard-luck loss after giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits while only allowing two hits and striking seven batters, the 17th time in his career that he has struck out at least five batters. Junior reliever
Ryan Lauk came on in relief, tossing the final four scoreless innings, walking one and striking out two without allowing hit.
TT Bowens led the Blue Devils with a pair of hits while Sam Loda and Matt Bertochi each drove in an RBI in the victory for CCSU. Brandon Fox went seven innings in picking up the win, as he gave up just seven hits without allowing a run, while striking out two and walking one. Jared Gallagher earned his fifth save, throwing the final two frames, giving up the solo home run to Sabido, while walking two and striking out four batters.
After a scoreless first inning, Central Connecticut struck first in the top of the second. Dewaine drew a leadoff walk and moved to second when Peyton Stephens also walked. Dewaine advanced to third on a throwing error from the Seahawk catcher.
Chris Kanios reached on a throwing error by Abbatiello, who was trying to make the play at first, which allowed Dewaine to score.
The visitors added two more scores in the top of the fourth to make it 3-0. Back-to-back singles from Stephens and Kanios put the first two men on. Bertochi ripped an RBI single to left field that scored Stephens from second. With one out, Loda lofted a deep fly to left field that was corralled by sophomore
Emil Matti, which scored Kanios to make it 3-0.
Two straight hits from senior
Will Johnson and Schneider gave the Green & White two men on to start the bottom of the seventh. The Seahawks couldn't get the timely hit they needed, however, as Fox was able to retire the next three to get out of the frame.
After retiring the Blue Devils in the top of the eighth, Gallagher came on for Fox and retired the first two men he faced via strikeouts. Down in the count, 1-2, the towering 6-7 Sabido turned on Gallagher's payoff pitch and cleared the right field fence to put Wagner on the board.
Central held on for the 3-1 win as Fox allowed a walk in the bottom of the ninth to Matti before striking out Ruggiero and sophomore
Brandon Hall to end the contest.
