Towson, MD - Despite scoring twice in the top of the ninth, the Wagner baseball team couldn't complete the comeback attempt, dropping the series finale against Towson, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon.
The Seahawks fall to 1-6 on the season while the Tigers improve to 6-1.
On the mound, freshman right-hander
Chris Mormile (Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood) flirted with a no-hitter over the first four innings despite suffering his first loss of the year. The Wildwood, NJ native ended his day throwing 5.0 innings, giving up three hits, four runs, three of which earned, while walking four and striking out a season-best six batters. Freshman
Ryan Lauk (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) came on to throw two scoreless innings, in which he also recorded a strikeout.
At the plate, sophomore 1B
Anthony Pecora (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) finished 2-for-4 at the dish while sophomore catcher
Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) went 1-for-4, connecting on his first home run of the season and fourth of his career. Senior
Brad Currao (Howell, NJ/St. Rose) came on as a pinch-hitter and notched his fourth RBI of the year.
Towson mustered five hits in the second game of today's twinbill, with A.J. Gallo, Colin Dyer, and Cuinn Mullins each contributing two RBIs for the Tigers.
Mormile enjoyed early success on the rubber, notching five of his six strikeouts over the first four frames. After a scoreless top of the fifth, the Tigers struck for the first runs of the contest in the bottom half of the inning.
Colin Gimblet walked, and Noah Cabrera reached on a Mormile fielding error. The bases were loaded when Trey Martinez beat out an infield single. Mormile was able to strike out Dirk Masters for the first out of the stanza.
Gallo sent a two-run single to right field for the first runs of the contest. Dyer followed up with a bases-clearing double to left center extending the Tigers' lead to 4-0.
Wagner got on the board in the top of the sixth. With two-outs, Capra, an All-NEC Second Teamer a season ago, took the first pitch he saw over the right field wall as the Green & White trailed by three.
Towson tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the eight, taking a 6-1 lead. A one-out single from Mullins brought in two before reliever
Neil Abbatiello (North Salem, NY/Dobbs Ferry) was able to get out of the inning.
In the ninth, sophomore CF
Joe Silvestrone (Manapalan, NJ/Freehold Township) laced a doubled to left and junior RF
Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) single to short. Currao replaced freshman
Eric Lauk (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) with a RBI grounder that scored Silvestrone.
Junior SS
Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) reached on a fielding error by the Tigers' shortstop, which plated Cala. Towson's closer, David Mariggi was able to get the final two outs.
Wagner will be back in action March 10-12 as they will take on both Binghamton and Delaware in Newark, DE.
