Pitching, Timely Hitting Lift Wagner To 4-1 Win At Monmouth

Wagner scored a pair of runs in the first inning and never looked back in rolling to a 4-1 victory over former Northeast Conference (NEC) rival Monmouth at the MU Baseball Field.

The trio of Danny Marsh (Fr., Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township), Paul Mammino (So., Hillsborough, NJ / Hillsborough) and Nolan Long (Fr., Waterford, CT / South Kent) combined to strike out nine batters, against just one walk, while the offense went 3-for-11 (.273) with runners in scoring position to help snap an eight-game losing streak.

With the win, the Seahawks improve to 3-16 while the Hawks fall to 6-13.

Wagner started quickly with a pair of runs in the top of the first thanks go opening the game with three-straight hits. Freshman Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) smashed the first pitch he saw up the middle for a single before Chris Smith (Sr., Tampa, FL / Ellsworth CC (IA)) laced the second pitch of the game to left field for a double. Junior Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) followed with a RBI single through the left side to plate Mascelli to open the scoring while moving Smith to third. Following a strikeout, freshman Brendan Benecke (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) pushed across Smith for the second run of the game with a RBI single through the left side.

MU threatened to dent the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with two outs only to be denied when Mammino induced an inning-ending pop up to keep the Seahawk advantage at 2-0.

After allowing four hits in the first inning, the Monmouth pitching staff settled down and retired the next 11 in a row before junior Zack Yesko ( Mukwonago, WI / Mukwonago) doubled to lead off the fifth. Yesko would later come around to score on a wild pitch while extending the lead out to 3-0.

The Green & White added to its advantage with another run in the top of sixth. Dini led off with a double before moving to third on a ground out. Benecke then collected his second RBI of the game with a single to center field that scored Dini while making it a 4-0 game.

Mammino was outstanding in relief of Marsh, who was on a strict pitch count of 45, and retired the first 14 batters he faced before running into trouble in the eighth inning. Jon Guida doubled with one out before coming around to score on Jake Gronsky's RBI single while trimming the the Wagner advantage to 4-1. After being summoned from the bullpen, Long quickly recorded the final two outs while stranding a runner in scoring position.

Long would then work around a pair of bloop singles in the ninth to close out the game.

Marsh (1-1) struck out two while yielding three hits over 2.2 innings of work in earning his first collegiate win. Mammino followed with four strikeouts over 4.2 innings of one-run ball before Long struck out the side in the ninth to highlight a five-out save.

Benecke and Dini each recorded two hits to pace an eight-hit attack while Gronsky and Joe Bamford each notched a pair of hits to lead the way for Monmouth.

After playing their first 19 games away from Staten Island, the Seahawks host St. John's in their home opener tomorrow at Richmond County Bank Ballpark with first pitch slated for 3:00 pm.
