Men's Tennis Competes At 7th Annual Villanova Invitational; Ohrner & Kneppelhout Runner-Ups In White Draw

Villanova, PA – The Wagner College men's tennis, under first-year head coach Shem Filipek, kicked off their 2017-18 season at the 7th Annual Villanova Invitational, hosted by the Wildcats this past weekend.
 
In the conclusion on Sunday, the pairing of sophomore Hans Ohrner (Margate, FL/Coral Springs Christian Academy) and junior Ilya Kneppelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands/Scala College Secondary School) were the runner ups in the White Draw bracket while juniors Anatoliy Lashkul (Kiev, Ukraine/High School #78) and Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa/Kersney College Secondary School) placed fifth overall in the Blue Draw bracket.
 
Additionally, sophomore Siddharth Anand (New Delhi, India/Modern School Barakhamba Road) and senior Allen Wang (Clovis, CA/Buchanan) claimed a tenth-place showing in the White Draw bracket while sophomore Dylan Walters (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. Stithians Boys' College) and junior Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot) finished 13th overall in the Blue Draw bracket.
 
Blue Draw
In the "two and one" format on the opening day of the Invitational on Friday, Walters/Poland fell to the Saint Joseph's pairing of Peter Dewitt and Dan Tan, 3-0. Lashkul/Sandy picked up a 3-0 victory over Loyola's duo of C.J Cash and Charlie Shanker.
 
On Saturday, Walters/Poland were pitted against the Lafayette's Blake Oslan and John Yurconic. The Seahawks fell 2-1, with Poland defeating Yurconic, 7-5, 6-1. Lashkul/Sandy suffered a setback in the early part of Saturday, dropping a 2-1 decision to Chestnut Hill's Andre Felix and Antoine Gautier. The Green & White earned the doubles point by a 6-3 margin.
 
For Round 3 of the Invitational, Lashkul/Sandy took on Chestnut Hill's Pedro Regalin and Adam Gavin, in which the Seahawks were victorious, 3-0 while Walters/Poland earned the victory after Walters defeated Rider's Lyander Payano, 6-2, 6-3.
 
In the final round, Lashkul/Sandy posted a 3-0 victory over Villanova's pairing of Stefan Suarez and Mike Czlonka with Wagner edging out the Wildcats, 6-4, in doubles and Lashkul getting a 9-8 (6) victory over Suarez. Sandy took a 6-1, 6-2 win over Czlonka.
 
The Seahawks concluded the Blue Draw bracket as Walters/Poland were victorious by a 3-0 score over Loyola's Cash and Shanker with Walters taking an 8-1 victory and Poland defeating Shanker, 8-3.
 
White Draw
Anand and Wang were paired against Conner Merrill and Tomas Christian of LaSalle in the opening match of the White Draw bracket. Anand/Wang dropped the doubles point, 6-2, but Anand was able to earn a victory over Merril (3-6, 6-2, 11-9). Newcomer Patricio Hernandez-Pons (Miami, FL/Es International School) saw his first action, falling to Tomas Christian, 6-2, 6-3.  Ohrner and Kneppelhout were victorious in their round one opening match, defeating the Saint Joseph's tandem of Scott Battaglia and Nick Ringle.
 
On Saturday, Anand and Pons were teammates in the doubles match, defeating Loyola's Colin Kanuch and Jack Shortell, 7-5. The victory helped Wagner escape with a 2-1 victory as Anand earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kanuch in singles competition.  Ohrner/Kneppelhout also enjoyed a 2-1 victory, this time over La Salle's Rogelio Gonzalez and Colin Lucius. The Seahawks picked up a 6-3 win in doubles with Kneppelhout capturing the win for the pair, defeating Lucius, 6-4; 6-1.
 
In Round 3 of the three-day invitational, Ohrner/Knepplehout defeated the Wildcats' Jimmy Purdy and Daniel Martinez, moving to the championship round while Anand/Wang advanced after earning a 2-1 victory over Lafayette's Daniel Kramer and Brandt Baldwin.
 
In the final round, Anand/Wang put forth a valiant effort in the doubles match, falling 7-6 (10) to Loyola's Brian Hoffarth and Kyle Gower. In the championship match of the White Draw, Ohrner/Kneppelhout kept pace with Villanova's Alastair Hurry and Matt Phelps before ultimately being defeated in the doubles point, 7-5. Ohrner and Hurry were neck-and-neck until Hurry was able to outlast Ohrner, 9-8 (5), sealing the championship for the Wildcats.
 
The Seahawks head to Hempstead, NY for the three-day Hofstra University Invitational, beginning on September 22 through September 24.
