Staten Island, NY - Recently-graduated Wagner men's lacrosse standout
William McMenamin (Longport, NJ / St. Augustine Prep) was selected to represent Ireland at the
2018 World Championships.
McMenamin survived a tryout process as one of 21 non-domestic players, out of nearly 100 prospects, who earned the privilege of representing Ireland in the World Championships that will take place in Netanya, Israel July 12-21, 2018.
"It's exciting," said McMenamin, who qualifies for potential participation in Team Ireland events because his paternal grandparents were born in Ireland. "It's great to have the opportunity to represent Ireland. I intend on going through the process of having dual citizenship. I have a lot of pride in my Irish ancestry, and I know my family shares my excitement that I'm going to be a part of the world championships in some fashion. Plus, my twin brother Pat and I were born on St. Patrick's Day!...What could be better?"
Back in late June, McMenamin attended the tryouts in Holtsville, NY, to determine if he was going to be one of the 21 non-domestic players that will ultimately compete in the National Team Training Camp (NTTC), which will begin October 27-29 in Dublin, Ireland.
He, alongside his brothers, Patrick and Michael, made a tremendous impact on the program while putting together one of the most prolific careers in Seahawk history.
A four-time captain of the Seahawks, "BMac" as he was most commonly referred to within team circles throughout his Seahawk career, earned a spot on the Northeast Conference (NEC) Spring Academic Honor Roll, as a biopsychology major, in each year that he was a Wagner student-athlete.
On the field, he finished his career ranked fourth all-time in Seahawk history in career groundballs (148), T-12 in goals (42) and T-20 in points (47). In 2016, his netted 28 goals, tied for first on the Wagner all-time single-season list.
During that season,
he and his two brothers made NCAA Division I men's lacrosse history by becoming the first set of three brothers to score a goal in the same game – a feat they accomplished twice, achieving this milestone in wins over VMI and NJIT.
There will be two teams from Ireland participating in the upcoming World Games. Team Ireland, which will compete in the 2018 World Championships and the Éire team, which will be competing in the 'Festival' tournament taking place alongside the World Championships. By making it through the first round of tryouts, McMenamin is hopeful of landing on Team Ireland but is guaranteed a spot on one of these two teams.
