Somerset, NJ – On the eve of Wagner's first Northeast Conference (NEC) tournament appearance since 2008, the conference office announced today that four members of the Seahawks' softball team have received All-Conference Honors.
Senior
Brianna Tredway (Downingtown, PA / Downingtown West) was named First-Team All-NEC as an outfielder, while sophomore
Karen Prihoda (Hamilton Square, NJ / The Lawrenceville School) earned First-Team All-Conference honors at second base. Freshman
Amelia Van Orman (Orange, CA / Lutheran High School of Orange County) was voted Second-Team at first base, while first-year Seahawk
Zoe Bender (Glen Rock, NJ / Glen Rock) earned Second-Team All-NEC honors in the outfield.
It is the first time that Wagner has garnered two First-Team All-Conference selections since 2009, when Andrea Lazzari and Kate Eshelman both made the first team. In addition, it is the first time since 2008 that Wagner has four All-Conference selections.
In receiving the first All-NEC postseason recognition of her career, Tredway is the league's regular season batting champion with a .402 average that ranks 63
rd in the NCAA. In hitting a robust .440 over the span of 16 league games, the senior had 22 hits and 11 RBIs and will look to carry over her form into the postseason. For her career, Tredway now has 65 RBIs, 36 doubles and has more hits (171) than appearances (169) in four seasons on Grymes Hill.
Prihoda finished third in the conference for the regular season with a .399 average, good for 70
th in the nation. The sophomore is Wagner's leader in hits (59) steals (21), doubles (13) and slugging percentage (.595) on the year. The sophomore is slugging .636 in league play, leading the squad with three home runs against NEC competition. As Wagner's leadoff hitter, Prihoda is already fifth all-time in steals with 32 in just two seasons.
Prihoda becomes the first Seahawk to be on the All-NEC team in back-to-back seasons since current assistant coach
Kelsey Parker, who was a second-team All-NEC selection in 2015 and 2014 and first time a player has been on the first team in consecutive years since Lazzari in 2008 and 2009.
As a freshman in 2016, Prihoda led the Green & White in three major offensive statistical categories – batting average (.353), which ranked fourth overall in the NEC, base hits (55), which ranked fifth, as well as on-base percentage (.392) in earning First-Team All-NEC and becoming the first Seahawk freshman to earn First-Team All-league honors in a decade.
Bender, the Seahawks' number-two hitter in the lineup, finished her first regular season on Grymes Hill with a .314 average, good for 18
th among all NEC players, with 38 hits, 23 runs, and 15 RBIs, along with seven stolen bases. In conference play, the rookie outfielder batted .348 and scored 14 runs. The north Jersey native was a big part of Wagner's sweep of Robert Morris last week, which qualified the Seahawks for the NEC Tournament, as she delivered three hits, five RBIs, and three runs across the two games.
Van Orman, a versatile freshman, finished the season 22nd in the NEC with a .312 average, while piling up 29 hits, nine runs, seven doubles, and 11 RBIs. Against league competition, the first-year Seahawk was third on the team with a .395 average on 15 hits and collected four doubles and seven RBIs. In 15 league games, Van Orman had a .452 on base percentage.
While receiving the award for her performance at first base, Van Orman also pitched in 17 games, starting five and throwing one complete game with a 2-2 record. Against Rider, Van Orman combined with senior
Gina Massaro (Levittown, PA / Conwell-Egan Catholic) for a one-hit shutout in game two. In earning her first collegiate victory, Van Orman struck out three over three hitless innings of work before giving way to Massaro, who allowed no hits over two innings in the five-inning affair.
