Oracle/ITA Men's National Singles Rankings
Administered by the ITA (January 4th, 2017)
Tempe, AZ – When the Wagner men's tennis program kicks off the 2017 spring season next month, the Seahawk program will feature its first-ever ITA nationally ranked player in freshman
Hans Ohrner (Margate, FL/Coral Springs Christian Academy), who will open the season tied for 115th in the Oracle/International Tennis Association (ITA) Collegiate National Top-125 rankings.
Ohrner is the only current member of a Northeast Conference (NEC) program to be ranked and the first since January 6, 2015, when Arvis Berzins of Fairleigh Dickinson, who would go on to capture four straight NEC Player of the Year Awards, was regionally ranked 11th in the Northeast.
"Everyone on the team worked extremely hard in the fall and pushed each other to get better, which translated into a lot of match play success," commented second-year head coach
Jason Sinkoff. "For Hans, he played exceptionally well in the first half of his inaugural season here at Wagner, by winning all five of his dual matches. As a coach, it is an honor to see our program get recognition for having one of our own on the National Singles Ranking list as this program has come a long way."
"This is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and effort of every single player on the team," Sinkoff added.
Back in September, Ohrner began his collegiate career with a 6-1; 6-2 triumph over Peter Dewitt of Saint Joseph's at the Villanova Invitational - Champions Draw. His first NEC dual match win came later in the month against St. Francis Brooklyn's Diego Alcocer out of the Flight No. 5 position (6-2; 6-1).
Entering the spring, Ohrner has nine dual wins under his belt which is tied for the team lead with junior
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep), while also matching Boyd with a perfect 5-0 mark in dual match play. Ohrner is 4-0 while competing out of the No. 5 spot on the season and owns a total of six wins in doubles play, teaming with Boyd, sophomore
Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot) and junior
Allen Wang (Clovis, CA/Buchanan).
Ohrner and the rest of the Seahawks will open the spring season on February 4 when they travel to Latham, NY to tangle with Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) members, the Siena College Saints.
