Staten Island, NY - The 2016 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Men's At-Large Teams were announced on Thursday afternoon, recognizing the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Sophomore Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) of the Wagner men's tennis team earned a spot on the District 1 First-Team, joining nine student-athletes from the district while being the lone representative from a tennis program.
"It is not a surprise to me that Charlton was recognized for this honor," said Wagner head men's tennis coach Jason Sinkoff. "Charlton has always been a great leader, on and off the court. He exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete: smart, hard working, cares about others before himself."
"I strive to represent Wagner College to the best of my ability in the classroom and on the court," commented Boyd. "I am honored to receive this recognition."
The Academic All-District™ is divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the fifth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian, and two-year schools.
First-team Academic All-District™ honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
On the court, Boyd posted a team-leading 16-6 overall record and a 5-2 mark in Northeast Conference (NEC) matches. Out of the Flight No. 4 singles spot, the Shreveport, LA native was 11-3 and earned All-NEC Second Team honors at the conclusion of the season. Additionally, Boyd was a two-time Corvias ECAC Men's Tennis Player of the Month.
Off the court, Boyd is a member of Wagner's Student Government Association, Executive Board, Honors Program member, and serves as Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President all while maintaining a 4.0 grade-point average in each semester.
Boyd has actively organized and participated in many community service endeavors which include the Wagner Coaches vs. Players Children's Cancer Awareness Basketball game that raised nearly $1,000 to benefit Northeast Conference (NEC) Money Wars. During the winter months, he and his teammates donated hundreds of canned food items in a month's span for the NEC's Food Drive for Project Hospitality.
