Wagner-College Of Staten Island Basketball Game Features Borough-Wide Community Service Initiative

Staten Island, NY – Wagner College Athletics and the College of Staten Island will team up for 30,000 Degrees Night when their two men's basketball teams square off on December 22 at the Seahawks' Spiro Sports Center.

30,000 Degrees is an unprecedented collaboration that brings together leaders and anchor institutions embedded in the community from the kindergarten through college pipeline, non-profit organizations, faith-based organizations, the business sector, and local government to form the Staten Island Educational Partnership (SIEP).

The purpose of 30,000 degrees is to aid young people from Staten Island to graduate from college: ANY COLLEGE. By leveraging existing college readiness efforts and developing new strategies, we seek to achieve a measurable goal of an additional 30,000 baccalaureate degrees or higher on the Island by 2025.

"If every college would partner with schools of need and use their faculty and other resources, think how much better our city, our country, would be," said Wagner College President, Dr. Richard Guarasci. "Young people succeed when someone believes in their dreams. You've got to start early to nurture a college-bound focus in them."

10% of the ticket revenue produced at this game will be donated to 30,000 degrees. Fans and local businesses can get involved by participating in our Ticket Matching Program - an initiative that will help young Staten Island students attend the game. To participate in the Ticket Matching Program, visit wagnerathletics.com/30kdegrees.

Wagner-CSI Series
Wagner earned a 83-59 home win over CSI in what was the first meeting between the schools on the hardwood in 16  years. This year's contest will mark the 16th all-time meeting between the Seahawks, who elevated from Division II to Division I prior to the 1976-1977 season, and the Dolphins, who compete in Division III. Wagner holds a 12-3 lead in the 15 head-to-head matchups. These intra-borough schools, who are separated by just 3.9 miles of real estate, faced one another for the first time back on December 23, 1978, with the Seahawks coming away with a 79-67 victory. This contest kicked off a string of 12 consecutive seasons between the schools, through the 1989-90 campaign. Following a six-year hiatus, the series resumed with games in 1997-98 and 1999-00 and then took a 16-year break before resuming last year.
