Somerset, NJ – Sophomore shortstop
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) has been named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Week after leading the Wagner baseball team to a 4-2 record last week, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
In earning his first career NEC Player of the Week honor, Mascelli becomes the second straight Seahawk to win this award as senior C/INF
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township) was named the recipient for the week of April 6.
This also marks the first time since the 2010 season that Wagner has claimed NEC weekly honors in consecutive weeks, as
Damian Csakai ('10) and
Vin Avella ('10) received the honors on March 15 and March 22, respectively.
For the week, the Garden State native batted .478, going 11-for-23 with 2 doubles, six RBIs and 13 total bases, while posting a .565 slugging percentage and a .571 on-base percentage. In helping Wagner take three of four in its weekend series at Fairleigh Dickinson, Mascelli went a robust .533 (8-for-15) at the plate.
In the 15-5 rout of FDU in the series opener on April 10, Mascelli was 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBIs. The following afternoon, he went a combined 3-for-7 with two doubles and 3 RBIs in guiding the Seahawks to doubleheader sweep of the Knights, which came by scores of 3-0 and 6-2, respectively.
Mascelli kicked off his big week with a 3-for-5 performance in the Seahawks' come-from-behind 11-4 victory at Big 10 member Rutgers on April 7, which included a double, one RBI and one run scored.
Wagner, which opened the season 0-8-1 in its first nine games, is now 12-4-1 over the last 17 contests and will enter Tuesday's non-conference road tilt at Saint Peter's with an overall mark of 12-12-1.
