Shea Gegan (Belmar, NJ/Manasquan, NJ) scored all five of her goals in the first half, while junior midfielder
Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) and freshman midfielder
Lauren Ednie (Verona, NJ/Verona) added three goals apiece, as the Wagner women's lacrosse team breezed to a 22-3 victory over Delaware State this afternoon at Hameline Field.
In snapping their five-game losing streak, four of which came by one-goal margins, the Seahawks, who received goals from 11 different players on the afternoon, improve to 3-7 on the season while the Hornets fall to 0-12.
Today's matchup marked the final non-conference tilt of the season for Wagner as the Seahawks now embark on their seven-game Northeast Conference (NEC) schedule, beginning with a contest at Mount St. Mary's on Friday, April 3 with opening draw set for 3:00 p.m.
In addition to her five goals, Gegan, who leads the nation in caused turnovers per game, added six draw controls and three caused turnovers. Fay, her former high school teammate at Manasquan High School along the Jersey Shore, contributed four ground balls and three caused turnovers to the Seahawk victory
Senior midfielder
Jessica Mills (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) was the game's second-leading scorer with four, as she finished with two goals and two assists on the afternoon. Scoring two goals and one assist apiece for the Seahawks were junior attack
Stephanie Peterson (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) and sophomore attack
Olivia Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape). Junior attack
Tori McGrath (Albany, NY/Bethlehem Central) also tallied three points (1 G, 2A) for the Seahawks.
Chipping in with two points, on one goal and one assist, was junior attack
Taylor Pastore (Balwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker). Senior midfielder
Chantal Agnew (Poolesville, MD/Poolesville), freshman attack
Heidi Colford (Eden Praire, MN/Eden Praire), and freshman midfielder
Tori Ross (Sayville, NY/Sayville) all finished with one goal apiece. For Colford, this marks the third straight game in which she has scored at least one goal.
Junior goalie
Katie Ferraro (Owings Mill, MD/McDonogh) recorded one save and allowed just one goal while playing the game's opening 23:13 between the pipes in gaining the win and improving her record to 3-6. Senior
Shannon Sweeney (Madison, NJ/Madison) played the next 17:22 in goal, and did not allow a goal or record a save, in a stint that spanned both halves. Freshman
Lucy Darlington (Timonium, MD/Notre Dame Preparatory) came on to play the final 19:25 in goal. Seeing the first action of her career, Darlington was credited with one save while allowing two goals.
The Hornets received two goals from Emily Etkins and one goal from Iman Hassan while day Rhian Sellers had a busy day in goal and was credited with eight saves.
Wagner, which leapt out to a 13-1 halftime lead, held a commanding 40-7 edge in shots, and a 32-15 advantage in ground balls, while winning 14-of-27 draw controls. The Seahawks hurried Delaware State into committing 31 turnovers as the Hornets were successful on just 9-of-20 clear attempts.The Seahawks sank 5-of-9 free-position shots while Delaware State was 2-of-4 in this category.
NOTE: The 22 goals scored by Wagner vs. Delaware State ties for the second-highest output in Wagner history. The most goals scored in a game by Wagner came on April 7, 2006 when the Green & White posted a 24-11 victory over Robert Morris.
