Staten Island, NY – The Wagner baseball team jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one inning en route to a 7-2 victory tonight over Marist in the home opener for the Seahawks at Richmond County Ballpark.

With the win, the Green & White improve to 4-8-1 on the season while the Red Foxes fall to 4-11.

Junior right-hander Mike Adams (Egg Harbor Township, NJ / Holy Spirit) allowed just two earned runs while recording six strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings in picking up the win, which improves his season mark to 2-1.

The Seahawks' bullpen, comprised of juniors Paul Mammino (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and Nathan Hunt (Kirtland, OH/Hawken School) along with seniors Anthony Battaglia (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph By The Sea) and Steven Bloodworth (Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon), held Marist scoreless over the game's final 3.2 innings.while allowing just three hits.

In the first inning, a sacrifice bunt by senior centerfielder Trey Nicosia (State College, PA/State College Area) advanced leadoff-hitting shortstop Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) to second base. Junior left fielder Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro South) then laced a double, scoring Mascelli, and extending his hit streak to 19 games in the process. Senior first baseman Tommy Mazurkiewicz (Neshanic Station, NJ/ Somerville) added a two-run double during Wagner's four-run first inning uprising.

The Red Foxes cut the deficit to 4-2 in the second inning when shortstop John Brucker sent a deep drive that cleared the right field wall.

In the bottom half of the inning, freshman second baseman Phil Dickinson (Wenonah, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) moved up to third after Marist's starting pitcher, Spencer Bunting, was called for a balk. On the ensuing pitch, Nicosia delivered an RBI double but was thrown out by centerfielder Graham McIntire in trying to stretch it into a triple.

Wagner added a run in the bottom of the sixth, as Nicosia scored on an error by Marist second baseman Joey Aiola, and one more in the eighth when senior catcher Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township),appearing in his 177th straight contest, delivered an RBI double down the left field line.

The Seahawks will play a four-game series vs. New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) this weekend with a road doubleheader on Saturday followed a home twinbill on Sunday. Game one in both doubleheaders will begin at Noon.
