Staten Island, NY – Wagner head football coach
Jason Houghtaling has announced that the 2015 Seahawk recruiting is now up to 40 members.
These 40 student-athletes who have elected to continue their education, while pursuing a football career at Wagner College, have pledged their commitment to a Seahawk program that last fall claimed its second Northeast Conference (NEC) title in the last three years. Wagner went 7-4 overall in 2014, its last under head coach
Walt Hameline, who announced in December that he was stepping down as head coach after 34 years while remaining as athletic director.
The 5-1 league mark gave the Green & White, who won the 2012 NEC championship and ensuing NCAA Division I FCS Playoff first-round game over Colgate, a share of the 2014 NEC crown, though Sacred Heart represented the conference in the NCAA Playoffs by virtue of its victory over the Seahawks.
Of the 40-person class, four are mid-year enrollees who transferred in from other academic institutions and are already Wagner students, 35 are high school seniors who will be freshmen in the fall, while one is a transfer student who will enroll as a sophomore in the fall.
"We're very excited to have attracted such a high number of top-quality student-athletes who we look forward to blending with our returning core," said Houghtaling. "This class includes a host of tremendous players who will address specific needs that we have, and who I believe bring a strong academic foundation that will allow them to succeed in the classroom here at Wagner."
Broken down by geography, the class now includes 16 student-athletes who hail from New Jersey, 10 from New York, four from Florida, three from Maryland, two from North Carolina, with one each from California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia. Of the 40 student-athletes, 14 are projected as linebackers, an additional eight are listed as offensive linemen, seven are defensive backs, along with three quarterbacks, two athletes, two wide receivers one defensive lineman, one tight end, one kicker/punter and one long-snapper. It should be noted that two offensive linemen are listed as defensive linemen as well, while several of the defensive line and linebacker prospects were also top ball carriers in high school.
