Box ScoreLewisburg, PA – Wagner women's water polo dropped a hard fought 9-6 decision to 14th ranked Princeton in the final contest of the Bison Invitational which saw the Seahawks go 2-1 including a victory over 10th ranked Long Beach State.
The Green & White's offense began the contest slowly as they failed to deliver a score in the first quarter, finding themselves on the wrong side of a 3-0 lead.
The rest of the game was a stalemate as the Tigers and Seahawks matched each other's goal outputs in every period the rest of the way. Four goals in all were tallied in the second quarter within a three minute span which saw exchanging goals from each side as freshman
Kimberly Watson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec/ John Rennie) grabbed the first goal of the game for the Green & White, quickly followed by a strike from senior co-captain
Jessica Burdge (Stockton, CA/ St. Mary's). The Tigers would hold a 5-2 advantage at the halfway mark.
Wagner would cut Princeton's lead to two in the third quarter with only fifteen seconds remaining after
Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia/ Mountain Creek) found the back of the net as momentum seemed to be shifting in the Seahawks favor. Princeton grabbed the pendulum right back however as they registered a score with one second left in the stanza to regain a three goal advantage as the score was 8-5 at the end of three.
The fourth quarter was an evenly matched affair as both teams netted a lone goal. Lundgren tallied the only score for the Green & White in the fourth quarter as she completed the hat trick in the 9-6 loss.
Sophomore goalie
Emily Riddle (Edmonton, Alberta/ Dr. E.P. Scarlett) saved five shots in the cage.
The Seahawks record sits at 5-2 as they are scheduled to host Hartwick next Saturday, February 21 at noon.
