RESULTS Kingston, RI – The Wagner swimming & diving team battled to a nail-biting 150-150 tie at the University of Rhode Island this afternoon in the Seahawks' first meet since returning from winter break.
Following today's tie, Wagner is now 8-1-1 on the season.
Amanda Lucia (Easthampton, MA/Easthampton) led the Seahawks, notching first-place finishes in all three of her individual events. The junior started off on a good note in 200 yard butterfly, posting a first-place time of 2:06.39. She would keep this momentum going when she out-touched her Ram opponent in the 100-yard butterfly by .47 of a second (58.19). Lucia finished with her last individual event, the 200 yard IM, touching the wall at 2:11.51, in securing her third victory of the day. Following right behind with second and third-place finishes in the 200 yard IM were junior
Kara Lacoste (Chicopee, MA/Chicopee Comprehensive) and freshman
Maggie Slocomb (Landenburg, PA/St. Marks), posting times of 2:12.86 and 2:12.99, respectively.
In the 1000-yard Freestyle, sophomore
Grace Baird (Lexington, NC/ West Davidson High School) recorded her first individual win of the day, posting a time of 10:42.69, while junior
Maggie Shaw (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly) was second to the wall (10:45.31). Baird also recorded a first-place time of 5:10.84 in the 500-yard freestyle while freshman
Maddie McNichol (Downington, PA/Henderson) took home second-place honors (5:13.21).
Senior
Samantha Sides (Cherry Hill, NJ/ Cherry Hill East) ended the first half of the meet in a touch-out race victory in the 50 yard freestyle. Her time of 25.07 was good enough for first place as she just out-touched Rhode Island's Caitlin Haggan (Braintree, Mass/ Braintree) by .04 of a second. The South Jersey native also earned points for the Seahawks with her third-place finish of 54.67 in the 100-yard freestyle.
Sides also contributed to Wagner's third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The medley relay, comprised of junior
Erin Malone (Sewell, NJ/ Washington Township), sophomore
Katja Claesson (Fullerton, CA/Troy High School), junior
Michele Detka (Buckeye, AZ/ Verrado) and Sides, recorded a time 1:50.02 and was narrowly out-touched to the wall by the A and B relay teams of URI.
The Wagner diving team was a crucial part to the tie against the Rams, led by senior
Mallory Lee (Newark, CA/Moreau Cathloic), freshman
Sam Lavrich (Audubon, PA/ Methacton) and junior
Erica Curry (Fountain Valley, CA/ Fountain Valley), who took first, second and third place in the 1mtr diving, posting scores of 225.82, 222.52 and 212.91 points, respectively. Curry dominated the 3mtr diving with a score of 228.37 with freshman
Sam Lavrich (Audubon, PA / Methacton) taking second with 221.02 points.
Wagner is next in action on Saturday, January 24 in a 1:00 p.m meet at LIU Post.
