Nwajei Cops Fifth Choice Hotels NEC Rookie of the Week Honor

Somerset, NJ – Wagner freshman guard Jasmine Nwajei (Rockaway Park, NY/Murry Bertraum) has eclipsed the 20-point mark in eight of her last nine games, a scoring rampage that has allowed her to win four of the last five Choice Hotels NEC Rookie of the Week awards.

Nwajei's play has lifted the Seahawks to a 5-7 NEC record, good for seventh place in the 10-team conference. The top eight teams qualify for next month's NEC Tournament.

While her scoring prowess gains most of the attention, the New York City product is a scorer almost without peer in the NEC, her game is about so much more. In addition to averaging 25.5 points in the Seahawks' two most recent games, she also averaged 7.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.0 steals per contest in copping her fifth NEC weekly honor.

On Monday at Bryant, the Green & White, who already owned wins over Robert Morris and Sacred Heart this season, knocked off another team that resides in the top half of the league standings, with Nwajei again spearheading the effort.

The 5-foot-8 point guard poured in 25 points and grabbed nine boards during a 78-64 win on the home floor of a Bulldog team that entered the game tied for third place in the NEC and fresh off a resounding 81-50 vanquishing of Central Connecticut two days earlier.

At the same time that Bryant was making short work of CCSU on Saturday, Nwajei was playing all 40 minutes at Fairleigh Dickinson during a 26-point, six-assist, five-rebound, two-steal performance in a game that got away from Wagner late, resulting in an 82-70 win by the Knights.

Far and away the leading freshman scorer in the NEC, Nwajei ranks No. 2 in league games with a 22.3 average (No. 7 overall in scoring at 16.9) and is is No.1 in NEC games with 5.5 assists per outing.
