Jarrett Dieudonne Named NEC Defensive Player Of The Week

Somerset, NJ – Fifth-Year senior cornerback Jarrett Dieudonne (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Dillard) has been named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced today, following his two-interception game on Saturday that helped propel Wagner to a 20-10 victory at Central Connecticut.

Dieudonne now has five interceptions on the season, which is tied for second among all Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) players, while his 0.7 interceptions per game ties him for first in this category.

One of four captains on the 2014 squad, along with punter A.J. Firestone (Mercerburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy), center David Fredrickson (Staten Island, NY/Poly Prep), and linebacker Max Wassel (Totowa, NJ/Passaic Valley),  Dieudonne is the second Seahawk to earn an NEC weekly honor this season, joining Firestone who was named NEC Special Teams Player of the Week on September 29.

On Saturday, Dieudonne derailed three potential Central Connecticut scoring drives during the victory, helping the Seahawks to their third straight win while improving to 2-0 in conference play. In addition to his two INTS, the former All-NEC defensive back made two tackles and logged a pass break-up. The rangy 6-1, 190-pound Dieudonne made his first impactful play with Wagner protecting a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter when he picked off a third-and-12 pass at Wagner's 19-yard line and returned it 43 yards into CCSU territory. The Purdue transfer delivered a key hit in run defense later on in the quarter when, on a third-and-siz play from the Seahawks' 33-yard line, he wrapped up Preseason All-American Rob Hollomon two yards short of the first-down marker.

Then, with CCSU looking to cut into the Seahawks' 17-7 lead midway through the third quarter, Dieudonne came up with his second interception, snaring a pass that was intended for 2013 All-NEC selection Tyrell Holmes at the Wagner five-yard line.

In addition to his five interceptions this season, which is tied for ninth on the Seahawk all-time career list, Dieudonne is up to  12 interceptions for his career, a figure that places him in sixth place on the Seahawk all-time career list. Saturday's game marked the second two-interception game of Dueudonne's career, as he also picked off a pair of passes at Duquesne on October 12, 2013.

The 4-3 Seahawks will look to improve to 3-0 in the NEC on Saturday at 3:30 pm when Wagner hosts defending league champion Sacred Heart (6-2, 1-1 NEC) at 3:30 pm in a game that cane be seen live on ESPN 3.
