Staten Island, NY - Congratulations to the members of Wagner's Class of 2013, which included a host of Seahawk student-athletes, as The College's 126th Commencement took place earlier today.
A total of 566 degrees were were presented to graduates at the ceremony.today, including 419 bachelor's degrees and 147 master's degrees.
A live video of the ceremony was streamed on wagner.edu, allowing familiy members and friends of each graduate,
from across the world who could not be in attendance, the opportunity to view the commencement,
Civil rights activist and former chairwoman of the NAACP,
Myrlie Evers-Williams, delivered the main address and was awarded with an honorary doctor of humane letters degree. Evers-Williams became the first woman and layperson to offer an invocation at a presidential inauguration when she did so at President Barack Obama's second inauguration in January. Her address emphasized the impact that the the civil rights movement has made on society.
Evers-Williams is the widow of
slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers and June 12 will mark 50 years since he was assassinated in the driveway of his home in Jackson, MS.
"I believe in being an optimist regardless of if how difficult life may become, regardless of what curves life throws you, that you can always, if you will, find the good in almost anything," she said. "You have been given the tools for success. My question to you is how will you use those tools?"
Wagner also honored former Borough President Ralph Lamberti with an honorary doctor of humane letters degree.
