Staten Island, NY –
The Wagner College women's basketball program has announced its 2012-2013 season, which will mark the inaugural campaign under head coach Lisa Cermignano, the former Illinois and Vanderbilt assistant, who took over at the helm of the Seahawks on April 11.

The Cermignano era will begin on Friday, November 9 when the Seahawks host Army, marking the sixth straight year that the Green & White's season opener will take place against the Black Knights. A 1997 graduate and Hall of Fame player at George Washington, Cermignano espouses to a scheduling philosophy rooted in playing top competition. Highlighting the 11 non-conference games are road contests vs. a trio of BIG EAST heavyweights in Pittsburgh (11/20), Syracuse (12/4) and Louisville (12/21), in addition to a potential tilt at Saint Joseph's in the second round of the Hawk Classic in Philadelphia on December 28-29.

“When you're trying to raise the level of a program, you are only going to be the best if you're to play against the best and compete against the best. Adding Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Louisville and Saint Joseph's, you are adding programs that are traditional winning programs, so that will only prepare us for our conference schedule.”

“I want Wagner to become a winning program. Our team needs to get better and stronger together. We need to be able to fight through some things against to competition so when we get to our conference we're playing at a different pace and a different level.

The 2012-2013 campaign marks the 43rd season of women's intercollegiate basketball at Wagner. The leading returning scorer on the Seahawk roster is deep-shooting 6-0 senior Marie-Laurence Archambault (Montreal, Quebec/Montmorency), who averaged 7.9 points per game a year ago. A robust five-person freshman class punctuates a roster which features four just upperclassmen.

This relatively young unit will face a daunting task in the non-conference portion of the schedule as just two of the Seahawks' games will played in the cozy confines of the Spiro Sports Center. Following the Army opener, the Green & White will play four straight games away from campus, traveling to Columbia (11/14) and Pittsburgh (11/20), before competing in the Second Annual Patriot League/NEC Challenge. The first round of the event takes place at Lehigh (11/23), with the second round against Lafayette (11/25) in West Long Branch, NJ.

Wagner then hosts its second and final non-conference game vs. Iona (12/1) before it's back to the road as the Seahawks embark on a five-game road trip with a game at Syracuse (12/4). The Seahawks then travel to New Hampshire (12/17) and Louisville (12/22), before ending non-conference play at the 22nd Hawk Classic In Philadelphia. Game one has Wagner meeting UMBC (12/28), while host Saint Jospeph's takes on Fairfield. The following day (12/29), the Seahawks will meet either the Hawks or the Stags.

The beginning of January coincides with the opening of NEC play as the Green & White host three straight games, vs. Fairleigh Dickinson (1/5), Monmouth (1/7) and St. Francis (NY) (1/12).  Wagner then embarks on a stretch of five-straight road games, traveling to LIU Brooklyn (1/14), Central Connecticut (1/19), Bryant (1/21) and Saint Francis (PA) (1/26), before concluding at Mount St. Mary's (1/28).

Wagner welcomes February by hosting consecutive game as the Seahawks face Quinnipiac (2/2) and Sacred Heart (2/4) at the Spiro Sports Center. Following a trip to Robert Morris (2/9), the Seahawks return to Staten Island for a season-long four-game home stretch against Mount St. Mary's (2/12), Bryant (2/16), Central Connecticut (2/18) and LIU Brooklyn (2/23).

The Green & White then conclude the regular season with road contests at St. Francis (NY) (2/25), Monmouth (3/2) and at Fairleigh Dickinson (3/4).  The eight-team Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament will commence on March 10.

Game times will be announced at a later date.
