Women’s Basketball Holds First Practice Under Lisa Cermignano

2012-13 SCHEDULE

– One of the first milestones in the Lisa Cermignano era took  place on Wednesday afternoon when the Wagner College head women's basketball coach presided over the Seahawks' opening practice of the 2012-13 season at the Spiro Sports Center.
 
Seahawk fans will have their first chance to view the 2012-13 Wagner women's team in person on Friday, October 12 from 5:45 pm until 8:00 pm at the Spiro Sports Center when Wagner hosts its second annual “Madness Before Midnight” as both the men's and women's teams will be introduced to the public before partaking in basketball-related activities.
 
The NCAA allows women's basketball programs to begin practicing 40 days before their first regular-season game. The Seahawks host Army in the season-opener on Friday, November 9.
 
On the court, Wagner will rely on a trio of seniors to guide the way. The Seahawks return their second-leading scorer in Marie-Laurence Archambault (Montreal, Quebec/ Montmorency), a 6-0 senior forward who averaged 7.9 points per game while sinking a team-high 48 three-pointers. Archambault enters her senior season fourth on the Seahawk all-time list in three-pointers made with 168 and is on pace to reach 1,000-point mark as she has tallied 794 career points.
 
 Senior guard Veronick Fournier (Montreal Quebec/ Montmorency) averaged 5.7 points per game last season while playing her usual stellar brand of defense while fifth-year senior forward Chanez Robinson (Newark, NJ/ Shabazz), a second-year transfer from Northeastern is the leading returning rebounder for the Green & White at 5.0 per game to go with 4.0 points per game. Sophomore point guard Jacqui Thompson (Southampton, PA/ St. Basil Academy), a 5-3 sparkplug,  had her share of bright moments as a freshman in distributing a team-best 100 assists to go with 6.1 points per game.
 
Junior Laura Amorosa (Kirkland, Quebec/ Phillips Academy (MA), a 5-11 forward, checked in at 2.1 points per game last season while sophomore forward Stephanie Blais (Sherbrooke, Quebec/ Montmorency) and sophomore center Ugo Nwaigwe (Valley Stream, NY/ Valley Stream) averaged 3.6 points and 2.2 rebounds, respectively. Redshirt freshman Ebony Jennings (Monroe Township, NJ/ Monroe Township), a 5-11 forward, is looking to make an impact in 2012-13 after sitting out last season.
 
Wagner welcomes a four-person freshman class in person freshman class, headed by 5-6 left-handed shooting guard Jordyn Peck, who averaged 20. 4 points per game at Ohio's Shaker Heights High School last season.  Local 5-7 guard Jazmine Hamlet (Queens. NY/ Francis Lewis) is an adept ball-handling point guard prospect, Tessa Wade (Penn Valley, PA/ Lower Merion) is a 5-11 forward who displayed deep shooting range during her high school career. Rounding out the Seahawk freshman class is 6-4 center Emily Adams, who will lend size and a low-post presence. The Cumming, GA native played at Buford High School, one of Georgia's top scholastic programs.

The Seahawks will miss the contributions of 6-3 center Kelly Clark, who led the team in scoring at 13.6 ppg. and in rebounding at 7.8 boards per game last season. Clark finished 19th on the Wagner all-time scoring list with 1,117 points. Wagner is coming off a 2-27 campaign in 2011-12 which marked the final year as head coach for Gela Mikalauskas, the Seahawks' all-time winningest coach who announced her retirement following the season.
