Staten Island, NY - Another year, another parent. At the inaugural Madness Before Midnight event, senior
Josh Thompson (Bridgeton, NJ / St. Augustine Prep) rose to national acclaim with
THIS DUNK over his mother. Well, for an encore the Garden State native delivered
THIS DUNK over BOTH of his parents (Josh and Diane) to share the 2012 Madness Before Midnight Dunk Championship with teammate
Dwaun Anderson (Suttons Bay, MI / Suttons Bay / Michigan State). Anderson, like Thompson, garnered a perfect score and part of the title thanks to
THIS DUNK.
The night began with the introduction of the teams before both squads performed dance routines, capped when the men's team joined forces with the dance team.
Both squads then took part in a co-ed three-point shootout. Defending champion junior
Laura Amorosa (Kirkland, Quebec / Phillips Academy (MA)), like Thompson, repeated as champion for a second-straight year. This time she joined forces with junior
Jay Harris (Aurora, IL / Oswego East / Valparaiso) to claim the title in convincing fashion.
Next up was the dunk contest, which was judged by former Wagner basketball players
Doug Elwell and
Chris Martin along with former Green & White football standout and current Jacksonville Jaguar
Julian Stanford.
Both Anderson and Thompson edged out junior
Naofall Folahan (Cotonou, Republic of Benin / Wilbraham & Monson Academy (MA)) and sophomore
Mario Moody (East Orange, NJ / East Orange Campus) to make the finals, before each drew perfect scores of 30 to tie for the title.
The men then capped the night with a 15-minute scrimmage much to the delight of the fans.
Also highlighting the event was the introduction of first-year coaches
Lisa Cermignano and
Bashir Mason to the Seahawk faithful.
The women's basketball team opens the season right back at the Spiro Sports Center against Army on Friday, November 9 at 7:00 pm, before the men's basketball team hits the road for a non-conference tilt at Delaware State on Wednesday, November 14 at 7:00 pm.
