Wagner Basketball Ends 2011 On High Note

Staten Island, NY - Over a 10-day span to close out 2011, Wagner traveled over 6,735 miles on three flights and a bus, stayed in hotels for five days and played against three schools from conferences that routinely receive multiple-bids to the NCAA Tournament. To a casual observer, one might expect three losses from a normal Northeast Conference (NEC) school, but not to 2011-2012 Seahawks.

Wagner bested #15 Pitt (12/23) 59-54 to snap the Panthers' 70-game winning streak against the NEC on National Television (ESPNU) while additionally becoming just the third non-conference team to win in the 10-year old Peterson Events Center.

Following a brief trip home to Staten Island, the Green & White took to the West Coast to bring its powerful 12-man team. Wagner began the 45th annual Cable Car Classic with its first-ever win against a Mountain West Conference (MWC) school - a 72-61 victory over Air Force (12/29). The Seahawks then captured their first in-season tournament title since 1997 with a thrilling 64-62 victory over Santa Clara (12/30) on a Kenneth Ortiz (So., Newark, NJ / Science Park / Southern Mississippi) game winner - this jumper that fell through the net as time expired.

During that time head coach Dan Hurley has appeared on Mad Dog Radio, the Tim Brando Show and WFAN while having himself and his Wagner team profiled in such national publications as ESPN.Com, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Additionally, the Seahawks have been all over Sportscenter after collecting their first win over a ranked team since 1978 and following Ortiz's miraculous shot, which has been the most highly debated topic in sports circles over the last few  days. The Green & White enter 2012 with high hopes after ending 2011 with a 10-3 record, which including a school-record nine non-conference wins - fueled by victories over teams from seven different conferences (BIG EAST, CAA, Ivy, MEAC, MWC, Patriot, WCC). Additionally, the 10 victories are the most-ever at the turn of the calender year.

The work is not over yet as Wagner returns to action with the bulk of its "second season" starting on Thursday, January 5 against Fairleigh Dickinson at 7:00 pm. The  Seahawks will also appear on ESPNU against against defending NEC Champion Long Island on Saturday, January 21 at 7:00 pm. Take a look these excellent promos courtesy of the marketing office.
