Staten Island, NY – All 14 student-athletes that batted hit safely in Wagner's 15-4 non-conference romp over Seton Hall at Richmond Community Bank Ballpark. The Seahawks raked to the tune of 18 hits while scoring multiple runs in four of the first six frames en route to improving to 14-13 while the Pirates fall to 15-16.
Sophomore
Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) led the offensive-onslaught, going 2-5 with his team-leading ninth double of the year and three RBI. Senior
Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) also drove in three runs while going 2-4 at the plate. Sophomore
Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) was 3-4 with a RBI, rounding out the multiple-hit performers for the Green & White.
Benefitting from the run support was Wagner starter
AJ Pirozzi (Staten Island, NY / Farrell), who struck out two while yielding three runs, two earned, on four hits over 5.0 innings. The right-hander improved to 1-2 while collecting his first win since returning from Tommy John surgery, which forced Pirozzi to miss all of 2008.
Freshman
Ryan Van Spronsen (Brantford, Ontario / Assumption College) gave up one runs with two strikeouts over 3.0 innings while sophomore
Ian Karlsson (Brooklyn, NY / Xavieran) pitched a scoreless ninth, closing out the Seahawks' first win over Seton Hall since 2006.
Seton Hall took its only lead of the game with a run in the first inning.
The Green & White then mounted a two-out rally in the bottom part of the first. Junior
Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) blasted his team-leading ninth home run to straight-away center off the batter's eye, tying the score at 1-1. After sophomore
Matt Logan (Wall, NJ / Wall) and Drechsel drew walks, Boyd loaded the bases up with a single through the right side. Martutartus broke the tie with a two-run single to right field, putting Wagner in front 3-1.
The Seahawks added an unearned run in the bottom of the second, pushing the lead out to 4-1. Junior
Joe Conforti (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) led off with a walk, before stealing second. After advancing to third, the speedy outfielder scored on an errant pickoff throw
Seton Hall got two of the runs back in the top of the fourth, before the Green & White put the game away with five runs in the bottom part of the frame while batting around.
Freshman
Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) led off with a single to left field. Conforti and junior
Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) followed with bunt hits, loading up the bases with no outs. Sophomore
Jared Gruccio (Landisville, NJ / Buena Regional) followed with a single to right center, driving in Higgins to make it 5-3 Wagner. After an out, Logan singled through the left side, bringing around Conforti and Csakai while pushing the lead out to 7-3. Drechsel continued the hit parade with a base knock through the left side that scored Gruccio while chasing Seton Hall starter RHP Benedy Mejia after just 3.2 innings of work. Boyd welcomed Collin McGowan with a single through the ride side before Martutartus concluded the scoring with a RBI single to left center, plating Drechsel while making it 9-3 Wagner.
The Seahawks added three runs in each of the five and the sixth innings while pushing the lead out to 15-3. Seton Hall scored one run in the top of the eighth, providing the final 15-4 tally.
Matt Smedberg went 4-5 with a double to pace the Pirates.
The celebration for Wagner will be short-lived as the Green & White head down to the shore to face Preseason Northeast Conference (NEC) and reigning Regular Season champion Monmouth for four games. Game one is slated for Friday, April 17 at 3:00 pm.
