Staten Island, NY - Wagner College head football coach Walt Hameline has announced that 19 student-athletes have elected to continue their education while pursuing a football career with the Seahawks. Eight members of the 2009 recruiting class are enrolled at Wagner and will take part in spring practice.

"I am excited about this group," said Hameline. "'It's an excellent class academically and I think we filled a lot of our needs. I'd like to commend my coaching staff for their tireless efforts in bringing this class together."

Excellent run-stopper who recorded 42 tackles, including 11 solo, and one sack from his defensive tackle position….averaged 6. 0 tackles per game…helped lead his team to a 9-1 record…recorded a season-high 10 tackles (six solo) vs. Newburgh Free Academy…also an outstanding heavyweight wrestler.

Local product who turned down several college football scholarships in order to pursue a professional baseball career…Passed for 1,507 yards with 20 TD's and a .614 completion percentage his senior season in the competitive CHSAA…2005 Fabbri Award winner as Staten Island’s outstanding high school football player…was chosen in the eighth round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft by the Kansas City Royals…strong-armed catcher spent four years in the Royals’ farm system…is enrolled at Wagner and will take part in spring practice…a mature athlete who will be step onto the grid iron this fall as a 22-year old freshman and have four years of eligibility.

Led his high school team to a 10-2 record as a senior and a 9-3 mark as a junior…the Lancers won the Liberty Conference title in each of those seasons…an honorable mention All-Mercer County choice as a senior…rushed for 800 yards in just six games as a senior…was Team Offensive MVP and Co-Team MVP at Globe Institute where he gained 950 all-purpose yards.

Earned First-Team All 3A Conference honors his senior year…physical specimen who was credited with 21 pancake blocks his senior year and 97 pancakes for his career…played lacrosse in his sophomore year of high school and baseball as a junior…also a standout shot putter on the winter track team…spent last fall as a post-graduate student at Fork Union where he started every game at left tackle.
