Staten Island, NY – With the holiday season upon us, members of the Wagner College women's lacrosse team took it upon themselves to take part in a “Toys for Tots Holiday Drive”, whereby the student-athletes collected unwrapped toys which were donated on behalf of the team and the Wagner Athletic Department to the local Toys for Tots Foundation.

This community-minded initiative by the women's lacrosse team is in addition to the community service programs which are part of “The Wagner Plan.” An experiential learning model at Wagner College, the Wagner Plan places emphasis on service and practical experience, designed to enrich learning and to broaden students' understanding of community engagement.

“This is the second straight year we've participated in the Toys for Tots program and I am proud of my team for their genuine concern and community-minded spirit,” said first-year head coach Cristina Curiale. “Our student-athletes did a tremendous job and put a lot of time into this worthy cause. Community service will always be a central theme of the Wagner College women's lacrosse program.”

On November 12, the Seahawk women's lacrosse program took part in the “Up 'Til Dawn” Letter Writing Campaign that took place in the Union's Main Dining Room. Wagner is one of many colleges and universities who participate in this student-led, student-run program that raises monies and awareness in support of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Tennessee.

Up 'til Dawn unites students, staff and campus communities with the goal to end childhood cancer once and for all. Students help raise awareness and support for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital through a variety of activities and, at the end of the program, campuses host an all-night Finale Event and literally stay Up 'til Dawn. Students give up a night of sleep in honor of the patients of St. Jude who bravely fight cancer. At dawn, they find out how much their campus raised to advance the mission of finding cures and saving children.

The above-mentioned community-minded initiatives by the women's lacrosse team are in addition to the community service programs which are part of “The Wagner Plan.” An experiential learning model at Wagner College, the Wagner Plan places emphasis on service and practical experience, designed to enrich learning and to broaden students' understanding of community engagement.

“I am proud of my team for their genuine concern and community-minded spirit,” said first-year head coach Cristina Curiale. “Winning comes in many forms beyond the scoreboard.”
