Staten Island, NY - Wagner junior Katie Stevens (Reno, NV / Wooster) and grad student Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton) were named to the ESPN the Magazine / College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American District I Second Team as released by the organization today. This marks the first time Stevens earned accolades from the group, while Gallagher is recognized for the fourth time in her basketball / softball athletic career.
Stevens, a nursing major leads the Seahawks with a .392 average and 39 runs scored. The 2005 Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year is a member of the NEC Academic Honor roll and has 17 multi-hit and 10 multi-RBI games this season. This spring she ranks sixth in the league in average (.392), third in RBI (34), fourth in on base percentage (.491), fourth in runs scored (39) and fifth in walks (22).
Gallagher, a Second Team Academic All-American and the NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year as a senior last season, returned to the diamond with one final year of eligibility this spring. A two time ESPN the Magazine / CoSIDA honoree in basketball as well, she is hitting .316 with five home runs and 28 RBI. Gallagher has a current nine game hitting streak and is pursuing her Master's Degree in Business Administration with a Marketing concentration after earning a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry in 2006. Last week she hit .560 as the Seahawks went 7-1 and clinched a spot in the NEC Tournament for the fourth consecutive year.
Wagner (31-17; 13-5 NEC) earned the #2 seed in the NEC Tournament and will face #3 Monmouth at 12:30 pm in the first round on Friday. Top seeded LIU is hosting the Tournament at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Hackensack, NJ.
