Staten Island, NY - Wagner softball student-athlete Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton) was named Second Team Academic All-American by ESPN the Magazine / College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as released by the organization earlier today. Gallagher, a senior Chemistry major, becomes the first Seahawks softball player to ever earn the distinction.
A senior playing her first year of softball, she hit .333 and ranked top 10 in the NEC in triples (1st), slugging percentage (5th), RBI (5th), total bases (7th) home runs (10th), and average (10th). Earlier this season she strung together a league high 21 game hitting streak. Gallagher was a two time Basketball Academic All-American selection for District I before hitting the diamond this spring. This spring she was also awarded a $7,500 NCAA post graduate scholarship.
Wagner finished the season with a school record 35 wins, finishing third in the Northeast Conference at 15-5.
