May 11, 2006

Staten Island, NY - Wagner softball student-athletes Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton) and Margaret Gallia (Las Vegas, NV / Community College HS) were both named to the ESPN the Magazine / College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American Team for District I as released by the organization earlier today. Gallagher, a senior Chemistry major, earned a first team nod while Gallia, a sophomore Sociology major, was picked for the second team.

With her first team selection, Gallagher will now advance to the All-American ballot that will be released on May 31. A senior playing her first year of softball, she ranks top five in the NEC in triples, slugging percentage and RBI while hitting .346 at the plate. Earlier this season she strung together a league high 21 game hitting streak. Gallagher was a two time Basketball Academic All-American selection for District I before hitting the diamond this spring. Last week she was awarded a $7,500 NCAA post graduate scholarship.

Gallia is hitting .256 this season with 16 RBI and six runs scored. She was named the NEC Player of the Week on April 24th and had record a season high 10 game hitting streak earlier this year. A multiple honoree on the Wagner Dean's List, she has started 31 games for the Seahawks this season.

Margaret Gallia helped the Seahawks to a school record for wins this season

Wagner finished the regular season a program best 15-5 in the NEC, earning the third seed in the conference tournament on May 12-13. The Seahawks begin play at 12:30 pm on Friday when they go up against Robert Morris, the second seed.
