Softball Completes Series Sweep Against NEC Foe Stonehill

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College softball team wrapped up a weekend sweep of NEC foe Stonehill with an 8-3 win in game three on Monday, April 14.

The Seahawks came out swinging in the bottom of the first inning, earning five runs to set the tone. Junior Geanice Morales got things started with an RBI single to left field, bringing freshman Alayna Giampolo home while Junior Payton Janicki advanced to second. Sophomore Anna Burke followed with a two RBI single to center, scoring Morales and Janicki. With freshman Emma Rocha advancing to second on the play, Burke moved to first.

Sophomore Leilani Gonzales kept the momentum going with an RBI double to left, scoring Rocha and moving Burke to third. Giampolo later drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in Burke, giving Wagner a commanding 5-0 lead after one inning.

The Skyhawks got on the board in the top of the second, but the Seahawks responded in the bottom half. Rocha recorded a sacrifice fly to left, allowing Janicki to tag up and score, extending the lead to 6-1.

Wagner added another run in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, sophomore Brityn Buchanan at first, Giampolo at second, and sophomore Noelle Estephan at third Janicki delivered a sacrifice fly to center field. Estephan scored, and Giampolo advanced to third, making it 7-1.

In the fourth, the Seahawks tacked on their final run when Burke's sacrifice fly to center brought freshman Keira Armato home. Stonehill added two runs later in the game, but it wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit, as Wagner held on for the 8-3 win.

Sophomore Karson Zavala showcased a strong performance in the circle, pitching seven innings while allowing 11 hits, three runs, three walks, and striking out five.

Up next, the Seahawks will host the LIU Sharks for a doubleheader on Friday, April 18, followed by game three and Senior Day on Saturday, April 19.
