Staten Island, NY – Wagner College Softball Dominates Saint Peter's in Doubleheader Sweep (3-1, 8-2) on Friday, March 7
Game 1: Wagner 3, Saint Peter's 1
The Seahawks wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning. Junior
Payton Janicki reached base on an error by the Saint Peter's shortstop, allowing junior
Geanice Morales to advance to third and freshman
Taylor Reynolds to score the game's first run. Janicki then stole second base, which set the stage for Morales to cross the plate on an unearned run off the catcher's error, putting Wagner ahead 2-0.
In the fourth inning, freshman
Lilly Banse led off with a single, and Janicki was at third. Sophomore Britn Buchanan stepped to the plate and delivered a clutch RBI double down the left-field line, bringing Janicki home for a 3-0 lead.
The Peacocks managed to put one run on the board in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Seahawks' solid defense and pitching. Wagner held on to win 3-1.
Sophomore
Karson Zavala was stellar in the circle, throwing a complete game. She went all seven innings, allowing just three hits, one earned run, and no walks while striking out 10 batters.
Game 2: Wagner 8, Saint Peter's 2
Game 2 started slow, but the Seahawks exploded in the second inning. The bases were loaded with junior
Jordyn Dulken at first, freshman
Alayna Giampolo at second, and sophomore
Sydnie Trujillo at third. Sophomore
Noelle Estephan singled to drive in Trujillo, giving Wagner a 1-0 lead.
Lea Rachal then drew a walk to push Estephan to second, Dulken to third, and Giampolo home, making it 2-0. Janicki followed with a two-RBI double to left field, scoring Rachal and Dulken to extend the lead to 4-0.
Saint Peter's scored their first run in the fourth inning, but Wagner quickly responded. Rachal launched a solo home run to make it 5-1. In the same inning, with Trujillo on first and freshman
Emma Rocha on second, sophomore
Anna Burke singled to bring Trujillo home. Giampolo then singled to second base, scoring Rocha and giving the Seahawks a commanding 7-1 lead.
The Peacocks added another run in the fifth, but Wagner sealed the win in the sixth when Rocha scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-2.
Junior
