Men's Water Polo Competes In Six West Coast Contests

Whittier, CA and Claremont, CA - The Wagner men's water polo team traveled to the west coast to compete in the Whittier Invite and Gary Troyer Tournament. 

The Seahawks faced off against Whittier and Biola at the Whittier Invite and Concordia Irvine and #19 Cal Baptist on day one of the Gary Troyer Tournament and #10 Long Beach State and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on day two. 

Whittier Invite

Game 1 Results: Wagner 7 - Whittier 8

Wagner opened the scoring first with a goal from senior Mattia Bognolo. Whittier quickly matched it Bognolo was able to add another to end the first period. Freshman Matan Friedenberg found the back of the net a few minutes into the second quarter but the Poets were able to score twice more to tie the game at three heading into the break.

In similar fashion to the first quarter, Bognolo opened the second half with a goal. Following that, the teams would trade two goals each and the score stood at 6-6 with 5:42 remaining in the game. Whittier connected with 4:03 remaining but they were quickly matched by senior Kyle Chambers eight seconds later. With the game tied at 7, both teams could not score for two minutes until the Poets found the net again. The Seahawks were unable to equalize and they fell, 8-7.

Game 2 Results: Wagner 13 - Biola 12 OT/SD

The Seahawks jumped out the gate fast, thanks to a goal from Chambers. Chambers found the net another time and senior Andrew Cowie closed the quarter with a goal himself to give Wagner a 3-2 lead. The Green & White were outscored 3-2 in the second quarter and the game stood at five a piece at the half.

Biola again outscored Wagner in the quarter 4-3, but another goal from Chambers with 0:01 left in the quarter brought them within one, 9-8. Sophomore Patrick Ray scored the opening goal of the fourth quarter for Wagner. A few seconds later, Biola struck to give them a 10-9 lead. With 1:51 remaining, sophomore Maayan Nahari equalized and no team was able to score again and the game would head into overtime with the score tied at ten.

In the first of two three-minute overtime periods, Biola connected first but two late goals from Chambers and senior Vaughn Bui gave the Seahawks a 12-11 lead. In the second period, Biola shutout Wagner and were able to put up a goal so with both times knotted at 12, the game headed into a final sudden death period. 

Each team traded possessions and were unable to capitalize until 1:11 into the period, Friedenberg delivered with the game winning goal and gave Wagner the thrilling 13-12 victory.

Gary Troyer Tournament

Game 1 Results: Wagner 10 - Concordia University Irvine 15


The Seahawks were outscored 2-1 in the opening quarter with Chambers scoring the lone goal. In the second, Wagner tied the game, courtesy of a goal from freshman Smith Connors. Concordia Irvine proceeded to go on a 6-0 run to end the half and held an 8-2 lead. 

Concordia Irvine picked off where they left off scoring the opening goal of the second half. The Green & White would match the Eagles in the quarter 5-5, thanks to goals from five different Seahawks. Concordia Irvine led 13-8 at the end of three but Ray opened the fourth with a strike. Wagner would go on to outscore the Eagles 3-2 in the quarter but they fell short, 15-10.

Game 2 Results: Wagner 11 - #19 Cal Baptist 14

On day two of the Gary Troyer Tournament, Wagner faced off against their second ranked opponent this season, Friedenberg got the Green & White on the board first. Cal Baptist then scored a pair of goals before Chambers tied the game. The Lancers ended the period with a goal and led, 3-2. Friedenberg began the second quarter with back-to-back goals to make the score, 4-3. Cal Baptist scored three answered goals before Connors goal put an end to their run and the Lancers led 6-5 at the break. 

In the third quarter, a goal from Chambers gave Wagner a 9-8 lead. The Lancers then went on a 4-0 run and the Seahawks found themselves trailing by three at the end of the three. Both teams scored twice in the final quarter and Wagner fell short, 14-11.

Game 3 Results: Wagner 5 - #10 Long Beach State 23

Long Beach State, ranked #10 in the CWPA weekly poll, jumped out to a commanding 4-0 lead. The Seahawks managed to bounce back and score three goals in the opening quarter thanks to sophomore Eliot Alvarez, junior Vince Varga and Friedenberg. Varga scored his second goal of the game early in the second quarter but the Seahawks headed into the half down 10-4.

Wagner was shutout in the third quarter and allowed seven goals. In the fourth quarter, freshman Matt Wedlock got on the board but the Seahawks fell, 23-5.

Game 4 Results: Wagner 5 - Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges 12

Patrick Ray got the Green & White on the board to begin the game before the Stags ended the quarter scoring three goals. Varga scored the lone goal for Wagne in the second quarter as the Seahawks found themselves behind, 5-2.

The Seahawks were outscored 7-1 in the third quarter however they shut out the Stags in the final quarter and put up two goals but they fell short, 12-5.

The Seahawks will head across the city for a conference matchup against #6 Fordham on Saturday, October 12th.
