Fairfield, CT – Trailing 38-23 with 14:20 minutes to play, the Wagner men's basketball team rallied and cut the Sacred Heart lead to just two points with nine minutes remaining, but it wasn't enough, as the Seahawks fell 65-56 to the Pioneers on Thursday night.
Junior
DeLonnie Hunt led the Seahawks with 19 points, 17 of which came in the second half, while junior
Rahmir Moore added 10 points.
In splitting the season series between the two teams, the Seahawks fall to 11-9 on the year and 4-5 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play, while the Pioneers improve to 12-13 overall and 5-5 in NEC action.
Leading 24-22 at the half, the Pioneers quickly extended their lead to double digits in the first six minutes of the second period. Wagner fought back, as a 17-4 run cut the deficit to just two at 42-40 on a bucket by Hunt with 10:21 to play.
That is as close as the Seahawks would get, however, as the Pioneers pulled away late to preserve the victory.
Wagner held a 41-29 rebounding advantage, including a 16-1 edge on the glass, while outscoring Sacred Heart 36-22 in the paint. Individually, senior
Brandon Brown led the Seahawks with 10 rebounds.
The Pioneers were led by Bryce Johnson's 17 points, while Joey Reilly added 16 points.
Next up, the Seahawks will travel to Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, with tip-off set for 1:00 pm on NECFrontRow.
