Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College softball team earned two wins over Central Connecticut to move to 6-0 at home and 4-3 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play on Saturday, beating CCSU 1-0 in 10 innings in game one before shutting the Blue Devils out 8-0 in game two.
Game 1: Wagner 1-0 CCSU (10 Innings)
The Seahawks and Blue Devils were locked into a defensive battle in game one, as both teams remained scoreless through nine innings.
Senior
Eve Harvey kept the Blue Devils off the scoreboard in the 10
th inning. With the bases loaded and one out, CCSU's Molly Bruyns sharply hit the ball to third, allowing freshman
Kate Wolf to throw home and get the second out of the inning at the plate.
After Harvey retired the side on a flyout to left field, the Seahawks earned the win in the bottom half of the tenth, as Wolf hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home senior
Makenzie Miller for the winning run of the game.
Harvey only allowed four hits throughout the contest to earn the victory in a complete game shutout.
The Seahawks combined for six hits, with seniors
Natalie Del Ponte and
Nora Conway both recording multi-hit games.
Game 2 Recap: Wagner 8-0 (5 Innings)
Defensively, the Seahawks continued their dominance in game two, with sophomore
Scarlett Lloyd earning the complete game victory after tossing a two-hit shutout.
Lloyd struck out the side in the top of the first inning before giving the Seahawks the 1-0 lead at the plate in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single, which scored Del Ponte to give Wagner the early advantage. The reigning NEC Pitcher of the Week finished the afternoon with six strikeouts to earn her fifth victory of the season.
The Seahawks added three more runs in the second inning on RBIs by junior
Bianca Worthy, Wolf, and Del Ponte. An RBI groundout by freshman
Brooke Wood in the third gave Wagner a 5-0 advantage.
In the fourth inning, the Seahawks scored two more runs on an error and a wild pitch, before an RBI double by senior
Penelope Russ sealed the game for the Seahawks in the fifth, as Wagner earned the 8-0 win.
Wagner combined for 10 hits in the contest, as Del Ponte and senior
Mackenzie Vogler each recorded two hits.
The Seahawks and Blue Devils will play the final game of their three-game series tomorrow, with first pitch set for 12:00 pm.
