Hempstead, NY – The Wagner College softball team dropped a pair of games at No. 25 Hofstra on a chilly Tuesday afternoon on Long Island.
After dropping a 2-0 pitcher's duel in the first contest of the afternoon, the Pride took game two by a score of 16-1.
With the two losses, Wagner saw its a five-game non-conference win streak come to an end end in falling to 12-23 on the season, while Hofstra improves to 30-8 on the year.
Game 1 – Hofstra 2, Wagner 0
The Seahawks battled the nationally-ranked Pride, as senior
Morgan Brown more than held her own in allowing just six hits throughout the contest.
In the top of the third, junior
Karen Prihoda singled through the right side for Wagner's first hit of the contest, but was unable to advance.
Hofstra took the lead in the third inning on a Brielle Pietrafesa RBI single and doubled the lead on a bases-loaded walk to Brittany Alloca. With the bases still loaded, Brown limited the damage, ending the inning on a line-out and a strikeout to leave all three runners stranded.
In the fifth, a double by senior
Maddie Marable put a runner in scoring position, but a strikeout ended the Seahawks' threat, as the Pride away held on for the narrow victory.
Game 2 – Hofstra 16, Wagner 1
The Seahawks mustered four hits throughout the second contest of the afternoon and got on the board in the fourth inning.
Consecutive base hits by Prihoda and sophomore
Hannah Lewis set the Green and White up with two baserunners. Three batters later, senior
Stefanie Aplin came through with an RBI single to left field, scoring Prihoda to put Wagner on the board.
Hofstra scored nine runs in the second and seven runs in the fourth in notching its 30
th victory of the season, as Nikki Michalowski led the way with four RBIs while Sophie Dandola earned the complete game victory.
Wagner is next in action tomorrow, as the Seahawks travel to St. John's of the Big East for a single game, with first-pitch set for 3:00 pm.
