Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's soccer team improved to 3-0-0 on the season with a win over Holy Cross this afternoon at Hameline Field. This is only the second time in the program's history that the team has started 3-0-0, the last of which came in 2011. With the defeat, the Crusaders fall to 0-2-0.
Wagner scored their first goal in the 18th minute, when sophomore Siara Kolpon (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) skillfully directed a corner kick towards senior Amanda Sieferman (Tucson, AZ/Canyon Del Oro), who proceeded to head the ball into the net to make it a 1-0 game. Only 14 minutes later, Sieferman connected with sophomore Samantha Jensen (Ocean Gate, NJ / Central Regional), who galloped around a defender before blasting the ball into the net in the 32nd minute to increase the lead to 2-0. The game would remain as such until the final whistle.
Late into the second half, Holy Cross put heavy pressure on the Wagner defense, which senior goalkeeper Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY/John F. Kennedy) diffused with a pair of diving saves. Marcy made eight saves in today's contest.
"I think we played really well. Our first half was the best soccer we've played all year," said Sieferman. "I haven't seen this team play with that quality in a really long time. As a senior, let alone as a defender, it feels really great to be able to contribute."
This is the third match in a row in which the Seahawks' early lead locked them into a victory. It is also the third match in a row that has seen Wagner put points on the board first.
The Green & White return to action on Friday, September 9, when they travel to our nation's capital to face Howard University in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
