Jensen’s Hat Trick Lifts Wagner Over Bryant In OT Victory

RESULTS

Smithfield, RI – The Wagner women's soccer team conquered Bryant University this afternoon in a 4-3 come-from-behind overtime thriller. The squad has now surpassed the previous program record for most wins (9) that was set in 2011. Wagner improves to 10-4-2 on the season, and 3-2-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play. The Bulldogs fall to 5-11-1 on the season, and 1-4-1 in conference play.

The Bulldogs got on the board early, as Bryant's Julie Vajda found the net from 30 yards out in the fourth minute of play to make it a 1-0 game. Wagner answered 24 minutes later, when sophomore Samantha Jensen scored the first of her three goals, receiving the ball outside the box before beating the keeper and knocking the ball into the far side of the net to make it 1-1.

Bryant responded with a tally of their own, when Allison DeBenedictis knocked the ball into the net in the 30th minute from point-blank range to give Bryant the 2-1 advantage. Bryant's Scout Benson was able to slip the ball into the goal once more with seconds remaining in the first half to bring the score to 3-1. Wagner was unable to answer before the end of the half.

As the second half got underway, Wagner took complete control of the match. Wasting no time, Jensen scored her second tally of the afternoon in the 50th minute, collecting the ball before beating the keeper with a shot to the right side of the net to make it a 3-2 contest in Bryant's favor.

With the minutes ticking down, Wagner continued to battle for field position. In the 78th minute of play, sophomore Alyssa Willard commanded the ball inside the box before unleashing a shot that soared into the net for the tying goal. With the score deadlocked at 3-3, both the Seahawks and the Bulldogs continued to fight each other for scoring opportunities, yet were unsuccessful before time expired.

Scoreless at the end of the first overtime, the Seahawks readied themselves for one final push. In the 104th minute of play, Jensen skillfully dribbled past Bryant's back line before letting loose a tremendous shot that found the back of the net, lifting Wagner to a 4-3 victory. With the tally, Jensen now owns nine goals on the season. This also marks Jensen's second game-winning goal, as well as the second hat trick of her career.

"Road games are always tough for any team," said Jensen. "I was so proud that we could come together as a team and win this game after being down two goals in the first half. It shows a lot of heart to have such high energy in an overtime period and this team was able to do that. Going into overtime I knew what I needed to do and so I was so excited that I was able to execute that on the field to lead the team to victory."

"That come back was a full team effort," added assistant coach Jenifer Anzivino. "To fight back after being down 3-1 at the half and then find the winning goal was truly so inspiring, especially since now the ladies hold the record for the most victories in a season."

Overall, Wagner outshot Bryant 20-18, while goalkeeper Katie Marcy made five saves. During the match, 21 Seahawks saw action.

The Green & White return to action this Sunday, October 27th, when they host the visiting Colonials of Robert Morris. Sunday also marks the annual Senior Day game, in which Wagner will honor defender Rachel Reeves, defender Amanda Sieferman, forward Jackie Nicholas, and goalkeeper Katie Marcy.
